Moving cover art to a new location
« on: March 28, 2004, 09:45:50 am »

I tend to organize my Audio Files by "Album" as I have a lot of Showtune Albums. I have about 500 Albums in all, all categorized in MC10, and with each Album's Cover Art file stored in the single, MC default directory (C:\Program Files\J River\Media Center\Data\Cover Art\).

I want to move all the Cover Art Files to a new physical external USB Hard Drive Folder (I:\Cover Art\) where the actual music files are actually stored and organized.

How can I do this in the least painful (most automated) manner?

Thanks,

In Tools/Options/File Location, change the Track Images Location to the new directory.

Copy the files into the new directory.

Select all the affected tracks, right click, select Image, then Quick find in coverart directory.

Just did a bunch myself.

Thanks for your reply RemyJ.

Only problem is it didn't work: :(

Using MC 10.00.96.

Followed your directions TO THE LETTER. The tags of the albums/files did not change at all, and there were no error or any other type of messages...

thanks anyway,

Couple of things...

Tag updates don't always take effect immediately.  Depending on how many tracks you changed, you may have to navigate around a little to get the tags to update.

How are the cover art images named?  I think they have to be named "artist - album.jpg" to be picked up in a quick find.

Too bad! If it's a special naming convention necessary to pick up the Cover Art file, it's not Artist-Album.

You may be correct in assuming that a special format of file naming is necessary for MC to automate the assignment of the Cover Art to the correct album, but I sure can't figure out just what format works (I tried a new different ones...)

In MC9.1, you could do Find and Replace on the image path. It was perfect for stuff like this. Then they removed it in 10.0 for some reason

Make sure you use a space like Abba - Gold.jpg instead of Abba-Gold.jpg.

Also, double-check the File Location setting.

Remy's instructions should work.

It only works if your images are all named according to [ARTIST] - [ALBUM].jpg, though. I have a lot of compilation albums, soundtracks, white label CD's etc that don't fit this pattern.

Trying to change 500 CD Album Cover Art Photos to [Artist] - [Album] is really no faster than spending 3 wks, 3 hrs. per day to manually change the paths of each Cover Art File.

Looking for Matt and the Programming Gang to help us out here!

Another possibility is to drop images into the same folder as the album tracks.  MC should pick up any image found there.

Please try to find a workaround.  This isn't going to change in 10.0.

Could I ask why Find & Replace for cover art was removed?

JimH:

cjdshaw has it right...Is there ANY chance you could just PUT BACK search and replace on Cover Art Files?

That's still a workaround, but one that's IS do-able. And, after all, this particular search and replace WAS in the program at one time....

Thanks for your consideration.

There is no chance that anything will change in 10.0 now.  It's going to ship.

Try going through MC to My Computer, and you can drag and drop.  It should change the location of the pointers.  I just did it and all the pointers changed.  Also, just as a precaution, you should try only a couple of files to make sure it works.  Then you can use the smart list to find any albums that don't have covers so you can change those file names if they are incorrect.

Drew:

Doesn't work correctly. Does not change the cover art pointer universally; only the first file (mp3) is tagged as having the correct new location of the cover art.

How about

1. check the Box to save the image in the mp3 tag
2. update the file tags
3. change the cover art folder path in MC
4. uncheck the the box to save the image inside the file
5. update the file

that should then save all cover art inside the files to the new folder.

I think.
