Transferring files to MP3 player
« on: November 12, 2002, 05:51:54 pm »

My mp3 player (Nomad MuVo 128MB) show up as a removable hard drive in MJ 8.0. When I upload a playlist to it it takes forever. Practically 2 hours for 120MB of music . The same playlist in WMP 8.0 takes about 40 min. Is MJ configured wrong? Please help.

Hi contessa,

2 hours for 120 MB even with a USB 1 connection is rather long !

When transfering files did you unintentionally check normalize and/or force file conversion
in the Options dialog ??

I don't see any other reasons on the MJ side why it should be soooo loonng !
I have a NEXII handheld (128MB Flash card) and transfering files from MJ is just as efficient as
transfering from the windows file explorer. BTW did you try transfering from the file explorer ?

let us know !

On one occasion I did and on another occasion I did not. both times it took WAY too long. I can't find setting to change in any of option dialogues.

If I remember well (I'm @work and don't have a copy of MJ handy), in the device transfer window - when you click on your device icon in the tree view - you should have an Option button sitting at the bottom of the window, just below the track list.
That's where you'll find some transfer options like encode while transfering etc..

Anyway, since you said it also took ages when trying to transfer from windows explorer, it probably means it's an OS/driver issue.

Could you tell us your computer configuration ?(Processor, memory and windows version)

I'll be more efficient @home, later....

CMagic,

Thanks for helping.

Contessa,

CMagic's advice is on the money. Click on the "Options" button and make sure that the files are not converting or normalizing which would certainly slow things down.  If you are still experiencing slowness, let me know, I think I have a solution which I can implement.

I have tranferred files twice. Once without using any of the options and once with converting all the files to MP3 format and normalizing the level. While converting and normalizing did slow things down it had no impact on the actual file transfer  process.
My machine is a Dell 1.7 P4, 256 mb, 40 gb hd, running Win XP SP1. I do not think it is an OS/driver problem as I can transfer the same files with WMP 8.0 in approx 40 min.

Thanks for your dilligence in this matter

I forgot to add one more issue. I keep getting the warning "Available memory limit exceeded." But it does not seem to affect the transfer in any way.

thanks again

contessa,

Looks like it's probably not an usb driver pbm since winXp usb support is pretty good.
Now where to look ?
One thing is strange: 40 mn for 120MB with WMP8 is pretty slow anyway.
Transfering (straight mp3) a full 125 MB flash card from MJ8 to my NEXII player takes something like 12 to 14 mns.
It's a little faster from the windows explorer but not much.

My configuration is close to yours : Athlon 1.2Ghz / 256 MB / WinXp (not SP1)

One thing, did you install any of the drivers that came with your MuVo ??
If so, there's a possibility that they interfere with WinXP internal USB support (just wondering)

On your advice I uninstalled the MuVo software ,but it didn't make any difference. However I discovered that if I copy the files using the Copy/Move file rather than the Send to Device it takes approx 1 min per file rather than 5-6 min. Very strange. It'still no where near as quick Cmagic seem to be able to transfer files. The mystery continues.

Now it's getting weird. I reformated the MuVo, a media recovery, and used the move/copy disk file and it took 13 minutes to transfer the 120 mb. There was obviously a problem with the MuVo. Next I reformatted (media recovery) it again and tried the Send to Device. That took the same 5-6 min per song as before. There must be a glitch in MJ 8 wrt to upload function. Good luck fixing it. I will muddle through with the move/copy disk file for now.

P.S. Everything else in MJ 8.0 seems to work great. Well worth the price.

Contessa,

I need to finish a project I am working on, but when I am done, I will make some modifications that I think will help you out.

Contessa,

I made the modifications. Can you get the latest Portable Drive Plug-in from the download page and see if it does not improve the upload speed.

Thanks,

Steve

Contessa,

You are not being thick at all. Get the Portable Drive Plugin at

We have progress! I finally read the names of the downloads and found the correct plug-in. I installed it and transferred the playlist. It worked. It took approx. 11 minutes to transfer 119 mb. However, the transfer dialog box did not update the progress bars, but it did update the filename being transferred. If I tried to do anything else during the transfer MJ froze (no error messages) and I had to kill it from the task manager.
Thanks for the fix Steve. I hope you can solve the minor bugs when you get a chance.
