How do I transfer files in MC to my iRiver IHP120 ?
« on: March 26, 2004, 11:45:39 am »

Being an iRiver IHP120 (harddisk mp3 player) owner and MC 10 user, I already read here that JRiver is working on a plugin for it, so I'll have to wait for it. However I understood that it should be possible to drag and drop files to it, when it appears in the tree as a removable drive, which is the case. Could someone tell me however how I should do that, because I tried it for a test, but didn't succeed in the right way.
This is what I did and what happened: From the media library I opened a folder with an artist name containing subfolders, each with a different cd. I then dragged and dropped one of these subfolders (of a certain cd) to the folder on the IHP120 (which I expanded in the organisation tree) of the same artist (also containing subfolders with cd's of this artist). The result was that: 1) everything was clipped and pasted and NOT copied and pasted and I got the warning that an empty folder was left on my harddisk and 2) not the (complete) folder containing different tracks/files was pasted but all the loose tracks and files.
Am I doing something wrong and if so what ? Although it is of course easy enough to transfer files in Windows Explorer, I would still like to know how I could do it in MC.
Btw, I hope I made it clear enough what I mean.

I would like to know the same thing as I just received an iHP-140. I see a few problems with MediaCenter and iRiver integration so far.

First, I also can't figure out the correct way to transfer files. Additionally, Media Center needs an option to reduce the directory path length to under 52 characters. It appears to be a limitation of the iRiver file system. I would also like to see a filename conversion feature. I name my MP3 files with Artist - Album - Track - Title.mp3. This looks horrible on the player. During transfer, I would like to see it rename the file just to title.mp3. It would make it much eaiser to browse the filesystem.

Second, I can't dump my smartlists to the player in order to utilize them. I wish JRiver will hop on this quickly as more and more people are using them. I PM'd Steve a few days ago with the iRiver database information to help the plug-in development along.

Coming from an iPod, I really miss the tight integration.

Currently we have an iRiver ifp-380t which I can test.  I have updated the firmware on this player and it does not show as a removable drive in Windows. There are many versions of iRiver players and so for those of you who describe the player showing in Windows as a removable drive, I can describe to you how our generic Removable drive connectivity works and it should be the same for iRiver if the players truly interact with Windows as removable drives.

The following comments presume you do not have WMDM device support enabled.

Ton and Empyrean,

Files that are dropped onto a removable drive will transfer to whatever directory you drop them on. If you right click on your drive letter under CD and Devices, there is an option for 'Rearrange Upload Folders'. You can use this option to have MC auto create folders based on a variety of options. What happens when you simply drag and drop a file from MC's library to the iRiver drive letter?

You should be able to drop smartlists onto the drive or to use the right click 'Synchronization' feature.

Steve,

Thanks for the reply. I am pretty sure I do not have WMDM checked for my iHP-140. I'll give your suggestions a shot.

Thanks,

Hi Steve,

I looked and WDM support is not checked.
When I rightclick on my IHP120 I don't see an option "rearrange upload folders" in the menu ( I have MC 10.0.97). There is however an option "add folder".
In my initial post I described already what happens when I drag and drop a file/folder from the library ( in the content pane) to the IHP 120 in the organisation tree)
The file or folder IS copied to the IHP120 but is at the same time deleted from the directory from where I copied it. That means it is cut and pasted and not copied and pasted. Of course that is not my intention. I want to be able to keep my music files and only copy them to my mp3 player.

Ton,

Are you dragging the files on the drive letter under 'My computer' under 'Drives and Devices'? You should see your drive letter under Drives and Devices and not under My Computer. If you do, when you right click you should see the option for 'Rearrange Upload Folders'.

Hi Steve,
You're right. I was dragging and dropping to my IHP 120 under My Computer.
BUT there's no IHP 120 or device (other than my dvd player and dvd rewriter) under Drives & Devices. In other words my IHP 120 is only to be found under My Computer.
What should I do to to get it as yet under Drives & Devices ? Or is there still something wrong in connection with MC and iRiver ?

Ton,

I have posted something about this subject already. I have an iHP-140. Transferring files is easy. Only using the iRiver without playlists is terrible. I have more then thousand songs installed. Playing them is a drag because its not well organized.

Transferring files by dropping them on the player works fine. Make shure you rename the iRiver to "JUKEBOX".

I have the same problem.

By the way, if there were an MC plugin that updated the IHP 120/140 database with the tags from WMA and OGG files, as well as synching the music files, every IHP owner would buy MC (I should think).

Thanks MarSies, that works.  My IHP-120 appears under Drives&Devices now, but only as a driveletter not as Jukebox. Is that also the case with you ?
By the way, I never saw a reply from SteveG on the subject of the name of the IHP in your earlier post.

Media Center & iHP-140 Usage
« Reply #11 on: March 27, 2004, 09:15:20 am »

Here is some information regarding the usage of the ihP-140 (really any iHP-1XX) MP3 player with Media Center.

  • MediaCenter 10.0.100 (Registered)
  • iRiver iHP-140 1.40US Firmware
  • iHP-140 renamed to JUKEBOX
  • Enable Support for WMDM devices is NOT checked
  • Root folder set to "MUSIC"
  • Rearrange upload folders set to "None"
Functionality:

When connected, the iHP-140 appears as drive F: under "Drives & Devices". Synchronizing playlists and dropping files both transfer MP3 files correctly. With the settings below, MediaCenter automatically transfers all files to my MUSIC subdirectory on the iHP-140 with no folders. Perfect.

Issues / Features Needed:

Media Center needs the ability to retage the files during the copy process. The iHP-140 has a combined path and filename limitation of 52 characters. My MP3s are in "Artist - Album - Track - Title.mp3" format which is generally too long.

Media Center does NOT copy playlists to the device. I have tried every method imaginable with no luck. It appears that I have been able to MOVE them but not COPY.

Media Center needs the ability to generate the iRiver DB "iRivNavi.DB" file when complete. I have already forwarded the format of this file to Steve in PM. This will allow us to use the database functions of the iRiver which greatly enhances its functionality. You can then browse by Artist, Album, Genre, etc.

Interim Solution:

I think a good interim solution which would probably buy us some time would be to implement the renaming feature. Half of the functionality is already there by being able to rearrange the upload folders. If JRiver was just able to add a feature to "Change filename format" for the handheld device we could then, at least manually, use Media Center with the iRiver products.

With the addition of this feature, my settings would probably be:

Upload Folder = "Artist\Album"
Filename Conversion = "Title"

This would most likely cure any 52 character limitation we have with this device. I know development resources are being used for other things but I'm hoping someone could just invest a little bit of time to add this one feature to hold us over until full integration can be done.

Thanks in advance,
AJ

As a iHP-140 owner, I totally agree.  I have a demo copy of MC installed and love it, but I'm holding off on a purchase until there's better integration with the iHP series.

Great product, though!

Everyone,

I will focus on iRiver players early next week. There are at least two general types of iRiver players. Some are WMDM compatible and based on the latest drivers I installed Friday, I must tweak the WMDM code to make these work.

For those that work with the rename of 'Jukebox' this type of player appears to the PC as a fixed, not removable dreive. This too is fixable in a smoother way if someone can tell me the default volume label for these type players, I will have MC recognize them by default.

The default volume label on mine was IHP100.  I've since renamed to JUKEBOX to make it show up.

Steve,

That sounds great! The manual states that the default volum is "IHP-140" but I'm not certain anymore since I changed mine to "JUKEBOX".

Is there anyway to export a .M3U playlist file that was used to synchronize the handheld player? I'm so used to playlists being taken care of with my iPod, I'm not sure what is required.

Thanks for working on the iRiver products next week. The iHP-120 and iHP-140 series players are becoming quite popular.

Hi Steve,
Same with me as with dlaporte. However I am rather sure that my IHP-120 had IHP-120 as default volume label.

Sounds like good news for IHP owners on the horizon ! To the admins, I'm a site admin over at The Mistic River forums which is a place for Iriver users to talk shop. I've actually been recommending MC to people there even without official IHP support, but with this news, I'm sure that a lot more people will be turned on to MC. I hope you guys keep up the efforts, and eventually come up with a solution which will make MC the Iriver owners iTunes equivalent. As it is, MC already surpasses iTUnes in terms of functionality. This would make things all the better. Please keep us informed.

S.

Steve,

I don't recall the exact name my iHP-140 came up with. Defenitely not with iHP-140. It might also be dependent on the firmware version. Isn't it easier to call iRiver to ask them for the info.

I would like to have the ability to upload songs with the same directory scheme I have on my PC. If I use the convert command and relocate/move files I get all esubdirectory's on my iRiver. Would like to have something like that.

Don't know if this issue is for MC or for iRiver. But when you have loads of songs it's a drag to get to a certain song you want to listen to. Also I would like to be able to make playlists or songs grouped together without putting them in a subdirectory.

Also the issue of filenames and tagging that empyrean brought to the attention is an important thing.

Thanks for focussing on the iRivers!   :)

MarSies .....

p.s. Will you also update the help file with the handhelp information  :-\

Thank you for the update Steve. The work is sincerely appreciated. I'll tell the WMDM crowd over at Mistic.

By the way, out or curiosity, is it a necessity for you guys to get your hands on actual units for you to make changes to MC ? If it is, perhaps one of "US" can help by loaning one out. If I live near you guys, I'd gladly do it.

Everyone,

If I understand correctly, the iHP-140 reports as a fixed drive player and it may or may not be reported by WMDM.

I modified tonight's MC to recognize any fixed drive iRiver players that have iHP in the volume label which appears to be the default.

Sweetspot,

The players would be a help. We may end up buying them, but thanks for the offer. We are in Minneapolis.

SweetSpot,

Go to Tools->Options->Devices and you will see it towards the bottom.

AJ,

In regards to some previous issues, there is not a way to export a .m3u playlist for playback on a portable.  The other suggestions are possible but must wait for right now.

It works fine for me now with my IHP-120.
I renamed it again from Jukebox to IHP-120 and it is recognized now and shows up with a drive letter in the organisation tree.
Btw: Is it  possible that also the name (iRiver or IHP-120) is shown in the organisation tree instead of only the drive letter ? Or am I asking too much and/or is this impossible for some reason ? Sorry if this is a dumb question.

Ton, I agree with your request.

I have also asked this before. It would be cool if the handheld would just say the name of your player, instead of a drive letter.

I have a multi card reader and if cards are inserted they also appear in the handheld section. No big problem buth confusing and annoying.

MarSies .....

p.s. I still have to check the new things with my iHP-140. Can uploaded files now be copied to their directory's like on my PC ??

Yes, the same with me. I have an external harddisk and when this is turned on, it also appears in the tree with a drive letter. The driveletters change every time. depending which device is turned on first.
As for your (MarSies) question about upload files I don't understand exactly what you mean. Anyway I can drag and drop files now to the Action Window and then they are copied to the IHP. I can also add a (sub) folder to the IHP and drag the files to be copied to that.

Ton and Steve,

Method A:
Drag and drop files on the HH AW. That works fine. Files are converted from ape to 320kb MP3 files and cpoied into a single directory on the HH.

Method B:
Copy the selected songs with tools -> library tools -> move / copy disk file -> select a directory and copy.
Select this directory and all the songs
Tools -> advanced tools -> convert format -> options -> check all checkboxes and fill in your handheld drive letter,  I don't know what the last chaeckbox with "skip duplicates" does.

When you do this on your handheld all subdirectories for the album and artist will be made. That is what I would like when I drag and drop files to the HH AW. I do the copy action first because I had some problems a few builds ago with the original files also being converted.

Maybe this is already possible but I can't figure out how to do it. Maybe some1 can help me out  ?

If you want subdirectories created on the portable for Artist and Album, right click on your player under Drives and Devices and select 'Rearrange upload folders'. This will auto create the folders when you use the AW.

Most likely it is stupid to ask, but despite Steve's explanation I don't quite understand what Rearrange Upload Folders does/means.
What e.g. is the difference with Add (Sub)Folder ?

Ton,

Not stupid to ask at all.

Rearrange upload folders will automatically create subfolders based on your selections. For example if you have a track with an Artist named 'SteveG', if you select the rearrange folder option for 'Artist', when the file transfers it will be placed in a subfolder called 'SteveG' automatically for you.
