save id3 tag database but not mp3s, then import?
« on: July 28, 2003, 05:18:13 am »

hey.  bear with me for this, i hope i can explain it well.

i'd like to reformat my computer.  i already have a lot of my mp3's backed up to cdr from a previous reformat.  the problem is that the id3 tags have changed.

so what i'd like to do is export a database of all my id3 tags, then reassociate them with the mp3s they came from based on the filename.

i don't want to have to back up the whole (rather large) collection every time i reformat in order to maintain any changes that i've made to the tags.  is there some way to save just the tags and then restore them?

it'd be great if i could do this with media jukebox, but i'm fine with using another program for it, as i'll only have to do it once every few months.

thanks.

ps.  bear in mind that the file path is going to change since i'm going to partition the reformatted drive for a dual boot system and then move all my data to an external firewire drive.

I would pick up the FW ext drive now (if you haven't), give it a drive letter that will work in the future, then use MJ to move your media over to the external. Now, before you reformat your boot drive, backup (& copy) your license/library/coverart dir over to your external. After your reformat (and reinstallation of MJ), you can restore the license/library and copy the coverart (if it exists and is not embedded in the files, that is) back over to the appropriate place under the MJ dir.

why not backup the library? and also backup everything unde J river. this way you will have two backups.

format, re-install windows MJ8

then copy the mp3's back to the orginal dir, pull up the backup library

then save the database tags back to the orginal file.

right... but won't it screw everything up if i'm moving them to a fw drive?  the file path will change, so it wouldn't really be "the original directory"

you can place them in the orginal dir first them move them using MC9 to the new firewire drive. this will keep the playlists and database correct.

i have not checked lately but you could always use find and replace to change the drive letter.

change c:\ to x:\

why would i have to move them using mj?  once the tags are written back to the files, it doesn't matter if i move them via explorer, right?

or is it the mj database that's being restored here and not the id3 tags?

If you use windows Explorer after the library is loaded and move the files then MJ will not know where the files are.

This would require another file import.

this would also make you lose your play lists if you have any.

ok.  at the moment i'm more worried about the id3 tags than about the data that mj will have collected, but... point taken, and thanks for the help.
