Starting Media Server as a service on XP
« on: November 20, 2002, 05:45:45 pm »

I would like to be able to start the Media Server as a Service (so no one has to login to start the Media Server running) on my windows XP machine.  I tried to find this topic but coud not.  Sorry if it's been asked before.

Thanks, Eric

You could try FireDaemon.

FireDaemon works well but there's a trick to get it to work.

After you define the service, set "interact with desktop" to yes.

Start the service.

When the Media Server window comes up set the Media Server options you need including checking "automatically start sharing..." and unchecking "automatically start on windows startup".

Now close Media Server (not the service).

After the server closes, then stop the service.

Set "interact with desktop" back to unchecked and restart the service.

Thanks RemyJ - that is some quality obscure info, the kind that will probably save a lot of weeping and/or gnashing of teeth  :)

If you are running XP's Firewall you will need to ensure that Web Server (HTTP) port 80 (the default port for media server) is open. You can find this setting under the "settings" button on the XP firewall "advanced" tab which in turn can accessed from "properties" on your network connection adaptor etc. Then to get it to run as a service enable this via the "options" tab on the server itself.
