Thumbnails in TheaterView very SLOW....
« on: April 27, 2004, 11:43:34 am »

I run Theaterview (the maroon/brown one...Acadou or something) and I love it.  However, when I have thumbnails enabled, everything responds extremely slow....  FYI....I attach to a server in my back room.

With the thumbnails on, my remote tends to lag benind a bit (I run Girder) and you really have to wait for the screens to "catch up" when scrolling.

With thumbnails off, everything is screamin fast.

Is there any way to cache these or what?  Or is it the nature of using thumbnails?

MC 10's Theater View is much faster than MC 9.1, so make sure you've got the latest MC 10.

Thanks sixdoubleo.

Yeah, I'm running v10.  I may not be running the LATEST 10......23 or whatever it is..but it's 10.

Could it have something to do with connecting to a server?  I havent tried running it with a local DB to see if it speeds it up or not.  Does a client cache the thumbnails or load them from the server every time?

FWIW, I have a very freshly installed A7N8X, XP2600+, 512MB, ATI 9600 256MB WinXP Pro system.

Server is a Duron 1300, 256MB, WinXP Pro.

100Mbit wired LAN.

Thumbnails are not preserved between sessions when connecting to Media Server.  They'll always need to be built, which slows things down.

Try a local library (based on network shares?) to see if that's the case.

Thanks.

OK, will do.  I'm at work right now...I'll try it tonight.

Assuming that it IS faster with a local library, and given that the read-only limitation of the client/server setup is already sort of a problem for me, what do you think of this setup?

On my media server in the back room I call that the "master".  I map a drive M: to my music share on the network.  I import all media on that system....create playlists, etc....  Then schedule a task every 4 hours to export its Media and store it in...say M:\MCLib.

When I start the clients in the other rooms, fire off a batch file...compare the M:\MCLib vs the local Library.  If it's newer, copy it down local and then run MC normally.

Is this a ridiculous idea?  I need a way to have a shared library, global playlists and whatnot all over the house, yet still be able to throw a playlist together on a client and somehow save it.
