Playback/Burning of 48Khz Files
« on: April 28, 2004, 11:45:30 pm »

Hi all!

I've managed to extract some audio files from some concert DVDs I own. However, they are 48kHz 2-channel WAV files. They are currently play fine in MC10, but I have a couple of questions:

1) Will MC10 burn the tracks appropriately on a standard audio CD without needing other helper applications? I ask because CD audio requires a 44.1Khz sampling rate.

2) Can MC10 convert the tracks to other formats (MP3/APE/etc.) without sample rate issues?

Any other pointers to sample rate issues would be much appreciated....

Best,
Brad

1) You must first convert them to 44.1 kHz wave.

You can use Media Editor:
Tools>Advanced Tools>Media Editor

2) I don't know. You could just try. Though 44.1 is the standard.

MC can burn these to audio CD without you having to do a conversion first. MC will resample them to 44.1khz during the burn process.

OK, I didn't know that.

However, I would check the results before burning.

Good to know!

Can you force a resample for other conversion processes, like WAV to APE or WAVE to MP3, or will it only work for WAV to CDDA?

Alex B, thanks for the tip. I forgot that MC included the Media Editor...

MC converts them to 48 kHz MP3 or APE. If they work for you then don't resample to 44.1 kHz. 48 to 44,1 process is not lossless.

I don't know if 48 kHz MP3 works with portable devices etc.

I've hit a snag....

I tried to use the Monkey's Audio front-end to compress my large WAVs but MAC didn't recognize the files as valid. MC reports the files as "48kHz, 24bit, 2channel".

I haven't tried the "Convert Format..." command in MC10.

I tried resampling the WAVs using the Media Editor & although Media Editor opened the file, it wouldn't play anything nor could I convert the file to "44.1kHz, 16bit, 2channel".

Anyone have other ideas as to what I might be doing wrong? If I were to guess, I'd say that MAC & Media Editor don't like 48/24 files, but.... ?

Before I wrote my previous answer I did a quick test:

I converted an old 44.1/16/2 wave file to 48/16/2 in Media Editor.
I imported the 48 wave to MC.
I converted it in MC to 48/16/2 MP3 and 48/16/2 APE
I played all in MC. They were working OK.

But now I see that your files are 24 bit. Obviously Media Editor is limited to 16 bit.

There are other more sophisticated commercial editors e.g. WaveLab, but they are relatively expensive. (http://www.steinberg.net)

Perhaps you could find a freeware solution and/or get direct help from the AfterDawn site and forums: http://www.afterdawn.com.

I did some more conversion testing. I didn't have anything better to do.  (a lie...)

At first I converted a 44.1/16 wave file to 48/24 in Wavelab. MC played the resulting file OK. Then I converted it to several formats in MC 10.0.127. Here are the results:

I'll comment it later. Now I have to do the other things...

Alex,

Thanks for the tests! Good information to have!

Unfortunately for me, I can't seem to convert the WAV to anything (I'm getting conversion errors--see http://yabb.jriver.com/interact/index.php?board=3;action=display;threadid=21163 for the details).

Further updates as events warrant!

Best,

Did you try it in MC10.0.127? There is a new vesion of MAC, 3.99.
In your other thread you mentioned the stand-alone MAC 3.97.

How about WMA lossless? My test file was automatically converted to the standard 44.1/16.

If anyone has been following my conversion problems in the thread mentioned a couple of posts above, build 128 solved the WAV->APE conversion issue with a new conversion core. (MAC 3.99 still chokes on these WAV files).

Now the problem is different... (Matt, I'm looking in your direction... :))

The steps so far:
1) Rip 48KHz/24bit/2ch PCM audio track from concert DVD. Saves as a WAV file. This file plays perfectly in MC10.

2) Compress the WAV into 48/24/2 APE file. This conversion happens with MC10.0.128. The resulting APE file plays perfectly in MC10.

3) Use my CUE sheet and the MAC 3.99 MakeAPL utility to split the APE file into APLs. Import the APLs into MC....

Here's where the problems start:
1) The resulting APLs import with the wrong track lengths. Every one of them is shorter than it ought to be (I'm guessing some sort of sample rate problem).

2) The resulting APLs no longer play gaplessly. At the end of each one there is about 2-3 seconds of digital "static".

3) Burning the APLs to a CD in audio format seems to work, except for the time & "static" problems mentioned above.

4) Converting the APLs back to WAV shows the same problems as above.

I realize that much of this is MAC-specific, but the track length problem might be a MC problem....

Any ideas on how to split this huge APE file up? I'm guessing the only work-around will be to go back to the source WAV & split it up manually. Hopefully I won't run into sample rate problems there.

I am (of course) open to other suggestions... :)

Best,
Brad

It sounds like MakeAPL doesn't understand when the files aren't 44.1 khz.

I'll try to fix it in MAc 3.99 Update 3.
