IR receiver
« on: May 18, 2004, 12:55:37 pm »

Hi guys,

I'd like to control my HTPC with a remote control, but my current problem is that I don't have an IR receiver. On another hand, I do have an Ipaq with IR and a bunch of IR remotes I don't use anymore. So now I'm considering a few options:

1. The coolest option would be to get an IR receiver and use my Ipaq 1910 (which doesnt have bluetooth). In this case, I was wondering if I could actually browse my library from the Ipaq; or if it would be limited to standard IR commands. i.e. play/pause/next..... Also, does anyone know if the IR range is good on those devices?

2.  Get an IR receiver and use one of my good old remotes.

3. Buy a MCE remote + receiver off.

Then, for option 1 and 2, I was wondering the 2 following things:
4. If i was to buy a logitech wireless mouse/KB combo, would I be able to use my remore control/Ipaq with it?

5. Where can I buy a cheap IR receiver?

Thanks in advance,

-Cascius

i cant answer your questions but can direct you to IR receivers:

IRMan:  http://www.evation.com/irman/ (receives only)
USB Uirt:  http://www.usbuirt.com/ (bidirectional)
Redrat:  http://www.redrat.co.uk/ (UK only?, bidirectional)

all of these are cheap (approx $35). i have the irman and it works fine. the bi-directional ones allow you to do much more sophisticated stuff: see Mastiff's website for examples of what you can do.

also i *think* jlee uses an ipaq (with his custom skin he created that looks like MC), maybe you should check with him for more info...

Thanks pip, good info. The thing that I find a bit weird is that those receivers are the same price than a MCE remote + receiver... But then, I don't know if the MCE receiver is bi-directional or not...

Anyway, I'll talk to Jlee about it.

Thanks mate,
