Multiple Libraries And Default File Locations
« on: June 04, 2004, 05:57:28 pm »

I've only been using MC for a couple months and might just be doing something wrong... However I don't see the answer to this in a search of the forum so here goes...

I have 3 Libraries that I manage from MC..
1) Laptop - Those items loaded on the local drive for listening
2) Archive - All MP3's of all my music loaded on an External Hard Drive at as high a Bit Rate as possible.
3) Low Rate - All MP3's at 256 Bit Rate or lower use this for most iPod syncs. It is just the Archive at a lower rate also on an External Hard Drive

Library Manager works well at making it easy to jump between these Libraries however the ability to manage the Tools/Options/File Locations settings for each Library is causing me problems at times. It seems that I must manually change these settings each time I switch Libraries. If I forget to do this and the last time I set this I was working on one of the External Hard Drive Libraries and I try to Rip a CD when the External Hard Drive is not hooked-up everything will lock up. If on the other hand I was last working on the Local Drive and I switch to the Archive to Rip a High Bit Rate of a CD it will end up getting sent to my local drive in error. There must be some way to let Library Manager know of different Default File Locations for each separate Library... Right?

I hope this question makes sense.

Thanks,
Lorne

Wrong.  :P

Unfortunately, for now, that is a global setting.  They might release a change via a beta patch, but odds are we'll have to wait until MC 11 (or later) for this feature.

Well... While not the answer I was wishing for at least I know that:

A) I wasn't "Doing it Wrong!"

and

B) Not the only one to have this problem

Over all I still love the product but this would be a nice item to give the Library Manager real "teeth". Link somekind of ini file to each Library to allow for custom Tools/Options/File Locations to match the type and location of the Library.

Is there someother way that I should/could do what I want using some other feature or command line parms or switches?

Thanks,

It's a bit of a hack, and I'm sure J River would disapprove, but this should work:

Load MC and set it up for the first library. Load the library, set your default paths etc. Quit MC

Open the registry editor and export the key
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\JRiver\Media Jukebox
as library1.reg

Open it in Notepad and delete all the lines except the ones that look like this:

Code: [Select]
Windows Registry Editor Version 5.00

[HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\JRiver\Media Jukebox]
"LastLoadLibraryDir"="C:\\MC10 database\\"
"LastLoadLibraryName"="MC10 database"

[HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\JRiver\Media Jukebox\Properties]
"RecordedFileLocation"="C:\\Media\\Audio\\"

Save it. Repeat this for your 3 libraries and you should have 3 .reg files. Now, if you double click on one of those before running MC, it should load with the relevant library and the correct default file location.

IF YOU DON'T UNDERSTAND THE WINDOWS REGISTRY, DON'T TRY THIS. ANYTHING YOU DO TRY IS AT YOUR OWN RISK. YOU HAVE BEEN WARNED

Thanks cjdshaw,

Interesting idea and I might just find the time this weekend to play with it. I had assumed that this feature (while maybe not supported) was available at the very least for product development and testing. I'll run the export as is now and save as my fall back and then create the 3 needed reg files after. Your "IF YOU DON'T UNDERSTAND THE WINDOWS REGISTRY, DON'T TRY THIS. ANYTHING YOU DO TRY IS AT YOUR OWN RISK. YOU HAVE BEEN WARNED" Is understood and any problem would be on my head and not yours.

Thanks again,
