I know how to define which apps open which files in both the "Folder Options/File Types" window and in the apps themselves, but I cannot figure out how to change the app that opens streaming files from Internet Explorer.  Of the two systems that I've tried, one uses Real Player for the same links that the other system uses MC to open.  All the settings that I've tried effect LOCAL files, but not streaming ones.  How do I change this setting?

I have no idea about IE (I looked)...it is probably in the Registry under MIME settings. It appears to be more on the side of the browswer plugin which decides where playback is directed to. It's easy to find out (and change) in FireFox...Tools>Options>Downloads>File Types (and the PlugIns button). Typing in about:plugins in the address bar of FF also works.

When I installed QuickTime, it prompted me to select the desired file associations for the plugin. Of course though, the only change it will make is directing to QT...not to some other program.

...maybe. Applies to local programs but not (seemingly) to browser plugins. Once again...I just don't know.

Thanks.  Unfortunately, you're correct that this only works for local files.  I can't figure out how to change the application that streaming links use.

Don't bust a nut then...move on...try FireFox. You'll never look back. Out of the box it's great...with some extensions installed it is truly excellent (plus you'll gain control over your plugins). Once you get up to speed on FF, you'll use IE for Window's Update...and that's about it.

This should work:  Open Explorer (not IE).  Tools menu > Folder Options > File Types.  Then click on the type you want to change and direct it to the proper software.  I can see streaming types listed this way.

EDIT:  Sorry, I hadn't looked at that link entirely.  I guess you've tried this?  It should have worked...

Exactly.  I searched around the web, and this seems to be the only suggestion of how to fix it.  Unfortunately, streaming files are somehow being treated differently.

I second that.  Firefox is (and has been and I imagine will remain to be) my default browser.  I only pull up IE for Windows Update (and I hate it that Microsoft makes me use it for that).  I mention that because the one thing I love about it is the plugin control.  I too was having the streaming plugin problem you asked about with IE.  Not a problem in Firefox at all though. It's also nice to be able to decide to download pdf files (for example) instead of having the bloated Acrobat plugin open and slow everything down.

Only other thing I would mention is the web site for Firefox, in case you didn't realize that it was a mozilla project.

I'd rather not use another browser -- I'd rather just understand how to change this setting on a "default" windows configuration so that I can change it on other systems as well.  I looked around the web and found other similar reports of RealPlayer taking over streaming associations -- it seems to have a reputation for doing this.  There is some way of setting this -- I just can't figure where it's hiding.

There's really no way I could ever figure out what to change in the registry just by trial and error -- there are just too many entries pertaining to certain functions and too many ways to break things.

Uninstall Realplayer and install Real Alternative (you can Google it). It comes with Media Player Classic (not the Microsoft player) which is much easier to configure and won't steal file associations.

I'll take a look at Real Alternative, but I still would benefit from knowing how to change this with the official RealPlayer installed.  I might try Real Alternative myself, but I'd like to be able to fix this issue on systems that aren't mine, where it's not up to me what applications are installed.  I know there is some setting that controls this -- it's just a matter of finding this information.

Real Alternative... wasn't. For me at least. No streaming source would open anyway. I do not have any ra files so don't know if they would have worked.

As for using a diferent browser, Firefox and its cousins have a lack of 3rd party tools. They also require use of Sun's Java if you need Java.

And, after my last install of Firefox (0.9.1) I had to use a tool called setbrowser to get IE back to the default.

Your mileage may vary.

However, I am always surprised when people say 'Just change to application X' as an answer to a problem. I'm probably real happy with what I use, don't want to change, and changing doesn't 'fix' the original problem anyway.

This is basically my attitude as well.  I appreciate any suggestions and experiences, but I'd much rather find a way to fix the problem than jumping to a whole new app as a solution.  The answer to this is there somewhere -- I just have to find somebody who knows about it.  I'm sure that the RealPlayer engineers could answer this question, but they just keep responding to my tech support emails with more questions.
