Libraries Synchronization
« on: June 21, 2004, 10:33:36 am »

A tool to compare two libraries ("diff") could be useful: compare two local libraries and compare a local library with another one shared via Media Server.

Yep. A tool to compare & sync multiple libraries would indeed be helpful.

Typical application - server with main library, laptop that travels for DJ gigs. It would be nice to be able to specify a playlist that would sync with the laptop, maintaining directory/filename structures.

Yes , me too. Synch of library and files between PC and Notebook or another Backup PC. One should be able to define what should be synchronize with a notebook, not just the whole library as there is far less space on a notebook,

And the great thing is that most of the functionality to do this is already in MC10 - through portable sync and the system for defining folder/file names when burning to CD!!!

It also would be great to compare my ape's with my mp3... Find which ones haven't been converted.

This would be a great feature,

I did this last thing very easily using two Smartlists as suggested by JimH.  Do the following:

1. Create a playlist called "Duplicates" (this is a utility smartlist that is used by the "Not Converted to MP3" playlist) it should have the following search string:
[media type]=[audio] ~dup=[Name],[Artist],[Album],[Track #]
2. Create a playlist called "Files to Convert to MP3" that should be created by selecting files not in the playlist Duplicates.

Just make sure to import any newly converted MP3s at the end of the session or before you use the list so you ensure you don't double convert files.  Otherwise this is perfect.  I also created another set of playlists to sync ratings between my APE, APL, MPC, WMA master files and the duplicate MP3 library using the same type of technique. Smartlists can be quite powerful.
