Changing Tags from a client machine ?
« on: June 22, 2004, 10:50:53 am »

I am using MC10 with a Media Server machine in a spare bedroom.
That machine is unconfortable to work on for extended time.

I would love to be able to modify my tags and ratings from my main PC, or to make or modify playlists, then available to all clients.

I could make the server directories RW accessible from the network, and access directly without Media Server, but I am reluctant to do so.

Currently, my directories on the server are read-only on the network.  I feel this gives me (some) additionnal protection against virus on client machines.

Any suggestions ?

Have you considered using VNC? It would allow you to use your main PC's keyboard, mouse and monitor to control MC on the server. My favourite implementation is TightVNC

I LOVE VNC as recommended to me for a Media Server issue on this very forum!

If you're thinking VNC, look no further than UltraVNC (http://ultravnc.sourceforge.net/).

Or maybe, just maybe, we could implement what the user is requesting ... it's not the first time it has been requested, ya know.

It would be a really cool feature.   Maybe setup a user login -- One READ-ONLY one with WRITE capabilities ? I dont know ..

Skeet,

I tried UltraVNC for a while at work (we use it big time for remote-control support), but it seemed to give me a lot of grief performance and reliability wise...

Has it improved recently? I thought I checked not long ago and there has been no new build for a while...

The 1.0-RC11d version worked really well for me.  A few weeks ago, I decided to try the RC16 experimental release based on the change notes and what seemed like some cool features, but it had some serious issues on my machines.  It was A LOT faster when it worked, but that was no where near 100% of the time.  RC17 is a lot better, and it looks like RC18 is out now with more performance improvements.  See this page for the newest experimental versions: http://sourceforge.net/project/showfiles.php?group_id=63887.

Based on my experiences and that I haven't tried RC18 yet, I'd suggest using the RC11d version off the main page...
