Audible field tag support
« on: June 24, 2004, 01:35:22 am »

As this very talented and hardworking team embarks on the relational MC11, may I please request again that you get Audible tags to read correctly in MediaCenter? Although Audible content plays in MC, only the filename and play time are displayed . This makes MC not really usable for managing Audible content. The world would love a singe media manager for all audio, video and images (and not to have to keep AudibleManager around, among others). Thanks.

I find that MC is indeed "useable" for managing audible content -- the problem is that the tags aren't saved to the actual file (they're only saved to the Library.)  You can still, however, tag Audible files with all the regular fields -- you simply need to remember that the information is stored in the library and not in the files themselves.  If you need to transfer to another system, you need to export/import a playlist to transfer the tag info over, or simply copy the actual library itself over.

I agree that it would be VERY nice if MC could read the "native" tags in the audible files, and save tags to the actual files like it can with mp3s.

LeoH,

We use DirectX to import Audible files and do not have a way to import tag information. We can try to find another way to do this.

Larry,

I have a large library of Audible titles (about 200).  Looks like I have a bit of typing to do but that will be better than nothing. Thanks for the input.

I know exactly what you mean.  If you do each one as you get it, it doesn't seem as bad, but having to "catch up" will be a task.  Once it's done, make sure you backup your library once in a while so you don't ever have to do this again.  Unlike mp3s, you can't simply re-import aa files since this will put them back to their original state (although you CAN import an exported .mpl playlist to transfer the tags to another system.)  Remember that the new aa tag info is in the MC library, NOT in the files themselves.

The good news is that an iPod will use the new MC tag info for the aa files (it would have been a deal breaker if this wasn't the case.)  In this sense, MC is better than other synching programs like Ephpod since these other programs don't allow you to change the tags or organize how the iPod displays them.  With MC, you can choose how audible files are organized on an iPod.  I'm not sure how iTunes works in this regard -- does anybody else know (i.e. can you edit audible tags in iTunes, and can you change they way then are organized on the iPod.)
