CD playback problems in MC
« on: June 30, 2004, 01:18:11 am »

I haven't listened to CDs on my computer in a while (I usually rip and use MP3s) but I wanted to listen to some tonight and found that there are problems with MC when trying to skip to a new part of a song.  When using Direct Sound output, I get a "broken record" effect (repeated sound) for several seconds after adjusting the position slider before the song resumes normal playback.  With Wave output, I don't get the broken record effect, but I do get a several second pause before playback starts again.

At first I was afraid that this might be a hardware issue, but I tried the same CD (and others) in Windows Media Player and they all worked fine -- just MC has this issue.  I also confirmed that the IDE channel is set to DMA.  I tried this on another system and got the exact same results.

Is there some setting I'm unaware of in MC that might explain this?  I use "gapless" and "immediate" settings for playback.  One system is WinXP, the other is Win2000.

Thanks,

Larry

This seems to somehow be related to song length.  I just tried a couple CD's with shorter songs, and skipping to a new spot worked normally.  I then went back to the CD that was originally giving me problems (which has longer songs -- i.e. up to 11 minutes) and noticed that if I only jumped ahead a small amount (a minute or so) it quickly started playing at the new position.  If I jumped 5 or more minutes, however, it did the broked record thing for several seconds before playing.

I also found that the "rate" of the broken record effect as directly effected by the buffer setting -- the shorter the buffer setting, the faster the repeated sound becomes.  Again, this does NOT happen in Windows Media player even with the 11 minute song.

It's not "just" related to song length apparently.  I just tried another CD with long songs and it doesn't have this problem.  Could this be due to some sort of copy protection on the CD?  It doesn't seem to be just a CD problem since Windows Media Player doesn't have this problem with the same CD that MC has trouble with, but not "all" CDs have this problem with MC.  It seems to be a combination of 1) Media Center, 2) certain specific CDs, and 3) seeking a greater distance.
