Muliple Genres??
« on: July 01, 2004, 12:01:05 pm »

Is it possible to put a song and/or album in more than one "Genre" category?

Like could I put something in the "Dance" category and also the "Disco" category?

If so, how can I set that up?

Thanks!

You can create a list-type field named Sub-Genre (or similar) that can hold as many genres as you like.

If you haven't tried it, tagging mode works well for filling in list-type fields.

Matt,

Thanks for the reply!

I apologize if these are dumb questions, but I've been playing with Media Center 10 for the first time over the last couple of days and haven't quite figured out everything.  But so far, I really, REALLY like what I see.  The organization & customization capabilities of this program are incredible!

But I don't think I'm following what you're saying.

How/where do you create a "list-type" field?

And what exactly is "tagging mode"? (I see the menu option for it, but don't understand exactly what it does as I don't see any change when I go into it.)

Thanks again,

Ron S.

When tagging mode is enabled (F4 to toggle on/off) you can select a file (or files) in the list and then click a check box or several check boxes in the panes above to allocate that tag to the selected files.  If you've created a new custom field as a semi colon delimited list via Tools, Options, Tree & View, Add then you can use this system to quickly allocate several genres to one file.

Check out this thread for a better explanation.

The "Sub-Genre" field method certainly works, and is good for some applications of this.  Another easy way to do it is to use the Keywords tag.  Its easy to make a view scheme that populates with all the keywords you have assigned to files, and then just drag-drop the files you'd like to assign onto the keywords.  This is nice because you can easily assign multiple keywords to the same files, which allows you to have a song (or video or picture) in multiple "sub-genres".

A song in the "Jazz" genre, and then with "Swing", and "Big Band" sub-genres (keywords) for example.

You can then set up a View scheme that populates, and shows both Genre (on top) and then Keyword (below) so that you can browse down to more specific subgenres if you want to.

That's because keywords is a semi-colon delimited list field.  We were simply explaining how to create and use another one (called sub genre rather than keywords).

Never really had the need to create my own (keywords has been working for me so I never really went looking), but that's very interesting.  Might be able to come up with some uses for that ... Thanks!
