Smart List: Select music using custom 3 field

I'm using the custom 3 field to generate a Smart List. I want the list to display songs where the custom 3 field is not null. There will be a variety of entries in this field, it is a free form field that I don't put any rules on for data entry.
How do I set my smartlist to include all files with something filled in the  custom 3 field?

Does MJ use it's own proprietary language for the database or is it using a standard language?
