MJ 8.0.400 Error when trying to rip a CD
« on: July 18, 2004, 08:52:51 pm »

When I try to play a CD on my Windows XP PC, first I get a message:
"Gathering information and updating view ...",

and then I get a Microsoft error message:

"Media Jukebox has encountered a problem and needs to close. ...."

The "Error details" shows the following:

Eror Signature:
AppName: media jukebox.exe AppVer 8.0.400.0 ModName: gdi32.dll
ModVer: 5.1.2600.1346 Offset: 00002f17

What is going on? Why even the simplest function does not work?

I would appreciate some answers.

- Alex.

This could be a hardware problem.

Try searching here and on google for PIO problems.

It's also possible that security settings are preventing YADB access.  You can turn off YADB in tools/options.

Can you see the tracks on the CD from within MJ? I'm just wondering if the error occurs when you click on the CD in the tree to view the tracks, or does the error occur when you select "Play" for one of the tracks?

Like Jim says, try disabling on-line lookup of track names (Yadb or CDDB) in MJ and see if it works better.

You may want to consider upgrading to version 10. There have been many improvements in CD handling.

Hello JohnT:

I have the "Enable on-line CD lookup" option disabled.

The CD shows in the Windows Browser as drive 'D:" where I can select any number of tracks, right-click on them and successfully choose any of these actions:
   - Media Jukebox / Play
   - Media Jukebox / Add to Playing Now
   - Media Jukebox / Import

But when I am in the Media Jukebox itself, and either click or right-click on
   - CD & Handhelds / Compact Disc (D:)
this is when I get the error message that I've reported.

As far as the suggestion to consider upgrading to version 10, with all due respect, why would I through good money after good?  In fact, if the maker of this software does not fix this bug, I will DEMAND that they either return my money or give me the upgrade that has the fix for free.

But we are not there yet, and I will really appreciate your help because there are a few CDs that I cannot wait to make for playing in my car as soon as I can get this thing to work.

Thank you,
- Alex.

Hello my namesake!

In my opinion that is not a common error with MJ 8. There can be something unstable elsewhere in the system. I hope that it gets fixed with help from JohnT and others.

I guess that giving a refund is not usually possible for a software manufacturer. Because the products are not physical they have no means to get the goods back. That is one of the reasons why J River gives a 30-day free trial. I suppose that you tried it before buying.

So was it working before? Think about any possible changes in your system.

Some things to do and check:

Did you try to uninstall and reinstall? Sometimes that helps if software gets mixed up. Backup your library first.

Did you check your hard drive(s) for errors? Is your virus scanner up-to-date? You could also disable Windows XP CD Recording (if enabled), just to see if that makes any difference (right-click the CD/DVD drive in My Computer to get there).

What other devices do you have? Have you installed other CD/DVD writer software? You should also paste your System Info from the help menu here.

The only things that look a little suspicious in the list of services are:

Creative Service for CDROM Access CTSvcCDA.E XE Running Auto
Iomega App Services AppService s.exe" Running Auto

They might be fine, I'm just not familiar with them and they *may* be causing a problem with cd-rom access for MJ. You might try disabling these just to see if it makes a difference (especially the Creative Service).

Can you play CD's ok in other applications such as windows media player or Creative Playcenter?

Please post your system info from the Help menu in Media Jukebox.

The mistery has been solved!

First, I re-installed MJ 8, but that did not help.

Then I rememebred that I had a trial version of Musicmatch Jukebox on my PC.  So, I uninstalled it and re-installed MJ 8 again.  That solved my problem.

I guess, these two products do not co-exist well.

Thanks everyone for your help and support.

maybe that is something that JohnT can look into if it also effects MC10

I've never had a problem running with both MC and MusicMatch installed, but I don't have the latest MMJB. Perhaps it's some background process that MMJB starts up and runs all the time which conflicts with MC.
