Using iTunes Store Songs w MC
« on: July 19, 2004, 10:20:37 pm »

I know MC supports the file format, but i was wondering if anyone could share their experiences of purchasing songs in iTunes but then using them primarily in MediaCenter.  I'm looking for general impressions on how such songs funcion in a MC library, ease of use, quirky behavior, etc, but i do have a couple of specific questions.
Specifically:
-How does iTunes handle the DRM?
-Can i use MC to upload these songs to an iPod?

Thanks for the help.
I appreciate it.

It handles the few iTune AAC files I have just fine.  I haven't tried tagging though, only playing.  Also, all visualizations you have going will suspend during playback of this type of file.  (I don't know the reason why, but it's a feature, not a bug. ;))

About iPod, I don't know since I don't have an iPod, but I would be literally shocked if MC did not support uploading the tracks.

I've been playing around with MC's iTunes AAC file support for the last few weeks.  It's not a big deal that MC uses an external decoder for the files (that being quicktime i think), but it's rather unstable if you happen to open or close iTunes.  I'll have iTunes open to shop for music or to share my library with my powerbook - and when i close it, the next AAC song to play in MC crashes the app.  It's somewhat annoying but it could be worse if MC didn't save the recent Playing Now lists.

Itunes tracks will go to the ipod using MC.  You have to sync at least 1 song first with Itunes to get a special file written to the ipod to allow it to play the itunes songs.  After that you should only use your ipod with MC, not back and forth.

See the portable digital players board on the main interact page for a ton of ipod info.

The itunes songs in MC are fine but you need to reacquire the album art, and the song title and artist are about the only tags that are picked up automatically.  Songs need to be rated in MC as well.

I continue to grow my itunes collection with few problems in MC.  The MC-iPod setup can be a little tricky but it works well once you get it going.
