Media Center 11.0.75 Alpha Available
« on: September 02, 2004, 05:02:13 pm »

We're still working on Media Center 11.  We appreciate your feedback on it, but MC11 may not work as expected and we can't yet fully support it.  When upgrading from MC 10, you will lose your settings.  Some plugins still do not work.

We recommend that you use MC10 below, but if you want to use MC 11 while we're building it, PRICES are here:
http://yabb.jriver.com/interact/index.php?board=3;action=display;threadid=23311

If you want a more trouble-free experience, please download Media Center 10 here:
http://www.musicex.com/mediacenter/download.html

Media Center 11 is available here:
ftp://ftp.jriver.com/pub/downloads/music/MediaCenter110075.exe  [see price link above]

Recent Changes

11.0.75 (9/2/04)

1. Fixed: On a fresh install, MC could show an error about failing to load the default Theater View skin.
2. Changed: Theater View no longer draws the PIP window when nothing is playing.
3. Changed: Theater View scrolling in the content list rolls from top to bottom.
4. Changed: Theater View page up / page down shows new page of thumbs in Theater View instead of just scrolling down one screen worth.
5. Fixed: Sample-accurate MP3 analyzer could fail to import / play some MP3s.
6. Changed: Removed Theater View touch-screen navigation controls -- instead show "Page Up" and "Page Down" button in scrollable lists.

11.0.74 (9/2/04)

1. Fixed: Theater View would lose keyboard focus after using the "Controls" button.
2. Changed: Added "Back" button to Theater View left panel.
3. NEW: Added zone access to Theater View "Controls" menu when there is more than one zone configured.
4. Fixed: The play button in Theater View would not play the selected item.
5. Changed: Media Jukebox.exe has been renamed to Media Center.exe
6. Changed: Installer now has separate pages for license agrement and setup type.
7. Fixed: MC would crash if a user selected one of the available services in the tree.
8. Fixed: MC would hang when preparing to burn a data CD if there were a lot of similar long filenames. This bug appeared only in the last couple builds.
9. Changed: Improved message box for alerting user to long filenames when burning a CD.
10. Fixed: Shift+1...5 would be translated as accelerators instead of typing.
11. Changed: Keyboard shortcuts for tree root navigation are Alt+1...9. (Ctrl+1...5 are modes; Ctrl+Shift+1...5 rate the playing song)
12. Changed: Starting a 3D Animated file view requires Ctrl+Alt+3 while clicking on Media Library item.
13. Changed: Output plugin stores settings in new location. (will require output devices to be reconfigured)
14. Fixed: If a very long silent gap spacing was selected for audio CD burning (e.g. 6 seconds), the burning process could hang.

MC 11 Improvements

  • CUE file playback support with sample-accurate MP3 seeking
  • Many Theater View enhancements
  • Animated Direct3D file browsing
  • Split views so you can look at two (or more) views at the same time (ex. look at Media Library and Playing Now together)
  • Vastly improved database engine capable of handling 100,000's of files and large amounts of metadata (lyrics, bios, etc.)
  • Several memory and speed enhancements -- like database and skin unloading when minimizing MC
  • Much of MC's interface can be translated to other languages
  • Integrated database import and update with smart broken linking repairing, and other nice features
  • MC can run with guest permissions on Windows 2000 / Windows XP
  • New view customization system with more flexibility for thumbnail size, text, etc.
  • Options dialogs reworked -- several small options added
  • Added multi-zone synchronization
  • Added Album Gain support
  • Document support with full text searching / indexing
  • Pane auto-sizing
  • Tile view that allows fully customizable Track Info style tiles to be used in file lists
  • New database caching layer that makes a huge speed difference in many areas of MC
  • File tagging happens in a background thread so MC can continue to be used while it's saving tags
  • Basic image editing
  • Enhanced album grouping for pictures so pictures taken together get grouped without any user intervention
  • Preview mode to only play the intro of songs

You can adjust the track boundary gap by going into Options/Burn settings and then click the Settings button under "apply cross fade and DSP...". Now drag the gap slider to where you want it and leave the transition set at "standard".
Sorry you can't do it on a per-track basis. Can you give me an example of when this would be useful?

Thanks!
John T.
JRiver, Inc.

Hi John!  I assumed (falsely it seems) that adjusting the gap slider would increase the length of silence between tracks, but leave the actual between-track gap at what appears to be 0 seconds.  In other words, the silence would be recorded at the head/end of the tracks and would be noticed if you jump from track to track, which isn't desireable.  If this ain't the case, then nevermind my wish, and thanks!

In any event, making it uniquely adjustable from track to track means that you could have gapless recording of tracks that are supposed to run together, but maintain the standard 2 second gaps between the remaining songs on the CD that aren't supposed to run together.  By making it adjustable track-to-track, it also opens the possibility to apply individually-tailored cross-fades between songs to make a truly well thought out mix CD.

Take care,

-Doug

Warning: it looks like the executable was renamed to "Media Center" so any old shortcuts will still load the old executable and funny things may happen (the main menu disappeared for me).

I still get an error when I try to add a custom item to Theater View or when I try to edit the "News" item.  It says "An unsupported operation was attempted".

cncb is right.

Double-check your shortcuts.  Running the correct version should show 11.0.75 in the about box.

It'd probably be best to erase "Media Jukebox.exe" from the Media Center folder.

I'm never sure what belongs in the bug thread, but here goes...

When I access my music library on my TiVo (via Media Server), I don't see my view schemes. I just get "Audio" and "Playlists." If I choose "Audio," I get "All Artists," followed by an alphabetical list of artists (if I'm not mistaken, at this point, I should be getting a choice of view schemes -- at least that's how it was in v10).

Thanks,

crow

**Can you please add    .csv to the supported list. It opens with MS Excell.
**Be able to have the EQ always visible in MegaMe
**Be able to change the tool tip fonts and background color... Would love to be able to use the ThunderStorm windowblinds skin again.
**Any way for you guys to be able to let us specify different Import locations for each library
**Can we be able to view www.last.fm from within MC. This is for the AudioScrobbler Plugin.
** Last Played.. 88:45 ago.. Can this be changed to days after 23:59? ie  1 Day 10:10 instead of 34:10

Theater View:

In Playing now (when there are more files in the queue that can fit on the screen), when the last song on the screen is selected and the next one is going to play, the green triangle (which shows which file is playing), is out of the screen, the playing now queue doesn't shift so it will be viewable.

Maybe a good idea to have the playing now song on top of the screen or divide the playing now screen into a "playing now queue" and a "playing now song info screen" ?

"mjextman.exe" doesn't seem to work anymore.  Is this because of the .exe rename?  I get a standard Windows XP error window asking me to send an error report.

Split views so you can look at two (or more) views at the same time (ex. look at Media Library and Playing Now together)

I still can't do this tricks.

With this build I have to customize my toolbars again. I lost all settings.

In the Theaterview Options dialog selecting News and clicking the Edit button results in two successive "An unsupported operation was attempted." dialogs. So does Add - Custom Item in the same dialog. Clicking the Edit button with any of the other items selected says "Please select and editable item and try again." I guess this is a work in progress! :)

MPEG Layer 1 you case out? where?

MPEG Layer 1 you case out?  where?

Oh no!   :-\

I must rectify:  now there is another problem, although it must be by the same of before.

Later to return to import the song, MC recognize it with false data in Bitrate and Duration.

The correct ones are:

   * Duration: 03:16
   * Bitrate: 128 Kbps CBR
   * Codec: MPEG Audio Layer-3 @ 128Kbps.

The file is MP3 (non Mpeg Layer 1) and is the same one that  previously posting in this thread.

Bugs: (do bugs go here?)

Bitrate <= 112 doesn't work for smartlists. At first it works, but when you've saved the smartlist it doesn't work again.

id3 year tag!! If this is missing, MC seems to assume the track is from 2003 or 2004. Then when I rate the song, this erroneous year is written to the file.
I'd rather it be left blank than an erroneous tag be written!

F*ck this, I'd go back to 10 if I could but my 30 day trial has run out and the ipod support for 9 was poo. But I don't want to pay to upgrade to 10 and then again to 11.

Oh great, and when we install a new version of 11 we lose our toolbar settings etc.

  • Shuffle button for Playing Now in Theater View doesn't update the list even though the track order updates.
  • The twice-left click to open items in Theater View doesn't work because the menu starts below the item.
  • Unchecking "show in theater view" for main items (audio, video) still shows those files in the list.
  • Right-clicking on non-selected view scheme results in no menu to be displayed (shows then hides).

Mind emailing me another file?  Thanks :)

Make sure you're typing your search in the search box above the list and not in the global (temporary) search box.  Also, please don't use alpha software if bugs are going to upset you.

PIP hides at the 'Home' screen by design.  This is just to make the Home page as clean as possible.

Hi Matt.

Yep I know which search box to type in.
Strangely, it seems to be working now. But when I created the smartlist it definitely wasn't when I'd switch back to the Low Bitrate smartlist. I don't know what's changed but it's working anyway.

Wow... much better!

However, I found the following things that were odd.

1. If I have selected no view schemes for Audio, Video, or Images, and then I select the corresponding button from the Theatre View home screen, MC closes Theatre View and starts playing the audio file or video file in the background. The main MC Mega view is shown.

2. In v10, Theatre View's resolution matched that of Fullscreen. I was able to set the resolution for Full Screen to 640x480 and it would also affect Theatre View's resolution setting (It looks better on a CRT television set.)  Can this be restored please?

3. Is it possible for a parent view scheme in the Media Library to push its "Show Theater View" settings down to child elements? I have some view schemes within other schemes and I have to check each one so it will show up in Theatre View

4. Opening Theatre View always opens up Full Screen view... meaning that when I choose Exit from Theatre View, I get sent to FullScreen View and not the Mega view where I started from.

5. I'll beg again... please please please give me an option to use the old "left / right" navigation from v10. It was so easy to use.  My wife is starting to hate the "double-click" to open functionality. If the right arrow brought you into a folder, you could skip the content menu :)

Please?

Again, this is so much of an improvement, I can't even begin to tell you how excited we are about it. Keep it up, and thanks for listening!

Hi,

Issues I've noticed:

media scheduler: tell it to play a playlist and it puts everything in your library into playing now. Issues regarding smartlists seem to have improved though.
(Seems I was mistaken. Typed the wrong path to the playlist and so it loaded the playlist root each time)

Files of type "asf" dont play, and show up in the audio library.

When starting my computer there is always a windows explorer window showing the Media center directory.
(After I uninstalled and reinstalled MC11 this went away.)

Auto sizing of panes is annoying. Panes with grouping applied take up more space than the other panes.

Imported some eBooks into MC11 to be read with Microsoft eBook Reader (file ending: .lit). Would you be able to include it in the list of supported documents?
Thank you!

Sorry for bothering you, this is working now, I had simply not installed Ms eBook on my freshly installed XP.

Anyway, if no application is found for a specific file type, MC11 should display a corresponding message.
