Convert Audio: Unprotected AAC/MP4 to MP3?
« on: August 27, 2004, 01:17:49 pm »

Hi all.  I'm having a problem with MC 10 converting unprotected AAC files to MP3.  I did a search on this forum, but did not get any results that seemed to apply.  The MC 10 help file states I must have an input plugin for whatever format I'm trying to convert, and since I can play unprotected AAC/MP4 files, I was curious as to why I can't convert them to MP3 (for my car and Tivo).

Any help is appreciated, thanks!

It's because MC is just using some hooks into QuickTime (either you've got QT6 or iTunes installed) to do the playback, regardless of whether they've got the FairPlay DRM included or not.  As a result, it doesn't have the raw stream.  My understanding of that is that even to write a decoder for AAC, you've got to pay license fees (as opposed to MP3, where the fees are only for encoders).  JRiver apparently can't justify the amount of $$$ Dolby wants for AAC (I think it's Dolby, at least).

Probably what I'd do is to run the files through WinAmp with an AAC decoder to get WAV files, then hit them with LAME.  Not the cleanest solution, but AAC is kinda of a hack into MC to help us play nice with iPods.
