Error: 'START DAO RECORDING'
« on: October 28, 2002, 01:26:26 pm »

I'm sure I'm not the only person that has had this problem...

I've recently updated both of my computers (one entirely dedicated to music) to version 8.0.388. Now when attempting to burn I get the usual 'preparing track x' and then:

Error: 'START DAO RECORDING' Command failed on device 1:0:0 unable to set recording speed

...at which point the burning process fails. This happens on two different computers (& two different CDRW models) but both running Windows 2000. I was eventually able to burn with 'use generic driver' box checked, but I now have to suffer the imposition of a two second gap, which I really don't want.

Given that all was working fine untill the upgrade, what happened between MJ versions? How can I rectify the problem? Help meeeeee I'm meltiiiiing!!!

Get W2k SP3
Get latest Adaptec ASPI (I know, MJ uses internal, but it can use external.....try it)

If all fails....Backup license......uninstall MJ....Reinstall MJ...Restore license

Xenno

PS: Make sure EVERYTHING is closed (especially MJ) when updating ASPI

I've been away doing some underwater documentary filming on the west coast of Scotland (sunny, cold with snow falling on the mountain tops - very scenic) so unable to attend to the more pressing problem of what's happened to my MJ's burning problems...

So...

Downloaded the (so-called) new version, (4.72) of the Adaptec ASPI driver and installed. Except that the unzipped file aspi_v472a2 appears to install an old version. Using the Aspi check that came with it, I get:

'ASPI is properly installed and fully operational'.

However, if I use what appears to be a separate, more current, version of Aspi check I get

'ASPI is not properly installed. One or more components have been replaced with older versions of the software.'

On another tack, JimH, in another thread, suggested that the Window settings for the drive may have changed from DMA to PIO. I'm not exactly sure if I understand this correctly but I checked the secondary IDE channel and this was indeed set to PIO. I've now changed this to DMA (the primary IDE is also set to [ultra] DMA).

...all to no avail. I still cannot burn without using the generic driver, when a little less than an hour before the upgrade to 8.0.388 I was happily churning out gapless recordings.

Is there a problem with the current version of the ASPI driver? Am I the only one with this problem? If this is so, why has it occurred at the same time on two separate and very different computers?

I also tried reinstalling MJ (without an uninstall)... no change.

Don't particularly want to install a new version of Windows, particularly as it was functioning correctly before.

Help!! Anyone??!!

I've now completely melted and formed a puddle on the floor

Did you get W2k SP3?

Extract ASPI 4.72 to a CLEAN (empty) directory

Once again..make sure no app is running

Go to Start>Run and browse to the directory where u extracted ASPI. Run aspinit.exe (4.71 used aspiinst.exe). If all goes well it will prompt for a reboot. Do so. Now go back to your ASPI directory and run aspichk.exe. You should be good to go. You can now delete that ASPI directory if desired.

Xenno

Xen-uno,

Really appreciate your help.

Upgraded to W2K SP3 and followed your instructions to the letter...

...but still getting the same error message, except that it went through the process of 'preparing' all of the tracks before giving the error message (it came up straight away with my last try).

I've checked the the vesion of the newly installed Aspi using the aspichk that gets deposited in the (new, clean) folder with the other unzipped components. It still says my version of aspi32.sys OK but is 4.71.2!!! Again, if I use what appears to be a newer version of aspichk it says it's not properly installed and one or more components have been replaced with older versions.

Is it possible that the Adaptec download link to Aspi v4.72 is, in fact, a link to an older version?

Serious frustration burns appearing now...

This is the problem, in order for MJ to use the ASPI layer you've just installed, you need to uncheck the option "use internal aspi" in MJ. It's in Tools/Options/CD Writer Settings. You need to restart MJ after changing this in order for it to take effect.
