Greetings - When ever I use Media Jukebox, I find I also have to use RAM BOOSTER as my memory seems to leak away quite quickly.

Does anyone have any idea what the best settings are to get the best out of RAM BOOSTER?

Often I also get complete lock up's & RAM BOOSTER appears to still be doing something, but up come these messages telling me I'm out of SYSTEM RESOURCES ... Is there perhaps some other type of memory I'm running short of ... Or is there perhaps a setting I have to adjust ... Any suggestions???

The best "Ram Booster" would be Win2000. You've got enough machine for it.

If your current on everything then I'm baffled. Tell you what though.....the majority of people that have problems like this (hard to solve) are running Win9x (including Millen Ed).

FYI: new version of Adaptec's ASPI is out (v4.72)

With 256MB, you have plenty of RAM for MJ8.  In the past, Matt has said that going from 128 to 256 made a pretty big difference in performance, but going from 256 to 512 really didn't change anything.  You shouldn't need to run Rambooster with MJ.

Memory leaking IS a problem with MJ, especially with MJ8 but also with MJ7.

Since Rusty is yet another Win98SE user I really think that MJ8 and WIN98 do not go well together!

Btw: I'm also fiddling around with Rambooster but so far without success.

I think that RAM BOOSTER is deception. It really does not free memory. It only clears disk cache or swaps something to the disk. And it slows down your computer. I would advise to uninstall it.

I haven't seen any memory leakage problems with MJ, but I'm on Win2kPro.

It is normal that free memory decreases during playback. All played files are cached in memory. And it is not error if you have 0MB free. Some utilities show only size of free memory, but don't show size of the cache.
You can try this small program, which shows cache size: http://www.sysinternals.com/win9x/utilities/vcmon.shtml

Cache size + free memory should be constant while MJ is playing

Hi Rusty, I have been using Rambooster for 3 years now and for me it has performed perfectly.  The problem with the memory leak has nothing to do with any version of MJ.
It is very well known that any Windows 9X or ME has memory leaks.  I am running Windows ME and 512Mb of memory, and I still can get down to 0Mb.  This also includes some Microsoft programs.  They don't return memory either.
To start with, make sure that you have the 1.6 version.  You should go to the help menu and click on FAQ and Help.  Then go to Find and type Options.  Choose the Options not options.  There you will find everything you wanted to know and maybe more.

Why are you running Rambooster? Do you need it to make MJ work properly?

The problem Rusty is refering to is the Out of resources error, which is also displayed on my computer using MJ8 after a few minutes or sometimes only after about 30 minutes or so.  It does'nt really matter what I'm doing - ripping, playing or nothing at all! There are no other programs running, only MJ.

I agree that memory leaking is a feature of Win9x. I also think that RAM has nothing to do with the "Out of resources" error (I have 384 MB and that's plenty)

Btw these problems do not occur with MJ7.

I run Rambooster for all programs I have on my machine.  Before I installed Rambooster, I was getting the same message many times a day.  I have not seen the message since I installed Rambooster.  I have not really tested MJ8.388 to see if it needs Rambooster.  It works perfectly for me.  I need Rambooster even when MJ is not running.

I have Win98. Before installing Rambooster, I was getting lockups frequently. Mj does use resources but not an unusual amount.
I have 256k of memory installed. I have my Rambooster set to reclaim 64k automatically when it gets down to 32K and to get 128k when I manually run Rambooster. I have to do the latter when installing a new or updated program, including MJ. Just in use, the former works fine.
If you want to "watch" your memory levels in action, run System Monitor. It's a utility that comes with Windows 98. You can configure it to keep an eye on many useful activities like CPU usage (in percentage), Bytes being Received, Bytes being Sent and Free Memory. I have my SysMon in Startup and the window size reduced but "on top" so I can see it at all times. The above are the four items I watch. There are others. JUst click on "Edit - Add Item" to see the list.

I can save on memory usage in MJ by turning off visualizations.

Default Windows98 setting is unlimitted disk cache, which is not good, because your free memory is 0MB after a few minutes.
I have only 88MB RAM.  Since I have set maximum cache size to 20MB, I haven't any problems with memory. So I don't need any RAM Booster.
I use utility from http://www.xteq.com, which can set many advanced Windows settings and hidden features.
