How to split large files during/after rip?
« on: September 22, 2004, 03:55:55 pm »

How can I split a large, single audio file that I ripped from CD? It is an audiobook that is one large single track. I tried ripping to mp3 and wma but Media Editor will not open them. It gives me a "Error Decoding File..." message when I tried to open up either the mp3 or the wma. I don't think that it splits files either, at least I didn't see it in the help file.

I ended up installing Audacity to do the job but I'm sure that there has to be a way to do it in MC.

One other question: How can I rip to mono instead of stereo? Most audiobooks are mono. I don't see this as an option in any of the encoding formats.

A freeware tool for splitting MP3 files: mp3DirectCut.

I use this custom setting in MC for mono MP3 encodings:

Tools -> Options -> Encoding -> Encoder: MP3 encoder, Quality: Custom -> Advanced -> Command Line:
--alt-preset medium --lowpass 10 --resample 22.05 -b 8 -m m

It makes relatively high quality VBR mono files (about 48-64 kbps).

Yes you can

but it would be nice if they made an option to split the file based on # of parts, # of mins, and bytes (Megs)
