Icecast streaming problems
« on: October 17, 2004, 09:26:26 pm »

I was wondering something. I listen to a stream frequenly and is completely smooth in winamp, however, in media center the performance is horrible. There are disruptions in the music, skips, and sometimes distortion.  This is about the only thing I can find about Media Center that isnt perfect  :)

I was wondering if anyone had any ideas what might be causing this, or what might I be able to tweak to change this.

The stream is an icecast2 stream, mp3pro encoding at 96k 44mhz. For what thats worth.

Thanks much,

Jim Kehoe

I am not an expert in this area, but could it be the mp3PRO encoding? Is it fully supported in MC?

Thomson introduced it some years ago and claimed that it is better than standard MP3 at low bitrates. It needs a special decoder for getting the advantage of the format. When played with standard decoders it is not any better than standard MP3.

What is actually the difference between the shoutcast, icecast and icecast2 streams?

Edit

mp3PRO without an mp3PRO decoder seems to be worse than regular MP3:

I tuned my PC to Indie Radio Live and tried the Broadband stream. I think there are two parts in this problem.

1. Winamp 5 seems to have better buffering.

2. The stream sounded like telephone with MC and Winamp 5 (both decoded it at 22.05 kHz.)

I installed Thomson's mp3PRO plugin for Winamp (2.x and 5.0) and the stream started to play at 44.1 kHz and actually sounds pretty good with Winamp 5.

I think it is up to JRiver if they see any need for changes.

Indie Radio Live isn't bad at all. I'm still listening to it.  8)

Would anyone know how I could submit a formal request to have this checked out or submit a bug request.. I would think that this might just be a matter of making an mp3pro decoding plugin for MC.
