Win XP PC crashes when I hook ipod to usb port

I am brand new ipod user. 40g 4th gen. My pc freezes the minute I plug ipod in to usb port. the mouse frozen, whole pc is frozen, start button frozen, ctrl/alt/del frozen. I have to unplug pc to restart. I need advice. xp home os. cordless logitech mouse plugged into usb. what else do you need to know?

I've posted on the lounge, too, but no one responded. Can you think of any direct way I can get help? also, I don't understand about the MC. What is the application, where is it available and what does it do? thanks so much for your advice
