Rather than add to my year old (( )) thread that keeps getting bumped, I figured I start a new one to ask this simple question.

I've now switched back to Nero (as opposed to Roxio), and today for the first time ever I used it to rip a CD.  I did this to test out their HE-AAC encoder.

Here's my question, or questions rather.

To listen to these newly created *.mp4 files, I opened up MC11, went to "My Computer," traversed to the directory, and to my pleasant surprise, MC proceeded to read in each .mp4 file (with full tag info intact).  I'm now listening to the tracks in MC.  My question is what decoder is MC using to play these back?  Nero's or Quicktime's?  (I've haven't done anything to MC as far as installing any plug-in's or the like.)  If it is just using Quicktime's decoder, should I care?


Second, highly doubtful, but does anyone know if there is a way for me to rip CD's inside MC using Nero's HE-AAC encoder?

To answer one of my own questions, now that I just added the cover art, I see MC displaying it's, "Media Center can not display visualizations for this file type," message, though, thankfully, it is still showing the album cover I just added.  Anyway, the "Visualization" choice reset itself to "Quick Time," so I assume QT is being used to play these back, not Nero.

So here is my third question.  I tried doing audio analysis on the newly imported tracks, but, of course, I got errors.  With AAC being the replacement for MP3, and with freebie (i.e., open source) AAC codecs well established at this point, when is MC going to start fully supporting this format?

I mean, you guys freely use the Lame encoder for your MP3 stuff, so why are you holding back for AAC?

Excellent questions.  I'm assuming they are somewhat afraid of Apple's wrath.  Probably rightfully so.

With that being said, I hope they can get in internally supported soon.  I would love to watch G-Force with the aac files.
