There's a new desktop bar from JRiver that gives you quick access to your music, files, programs, and lots of other useful stuff at any time.

The latest version of the JRiver Deskbar can be downloaded here:
ftp://ftp.jriver.com/pub/downloads/music/tmp/JRDeskbar109.exe

Update 9 Changes / Improvements:
1. Fixed: Deskbar did not work properly without Media Center 11 installed. (still)

Update 8 Changes / Improvements:

2. NEW: Deskbar can search for files inside of My Documents and launch them.
3. NEW: Deskbar can search for programs in the Start Menu or QuickLaunch bar and start them.
4. NEW: New help dialog displayed on first run or when typing ? and then enter.
5. NEW: Deskbar requires registration after 30 days of use. ($4.98 registration fee)

Installation:

With JRiver Deskbar 1.0.8:
When I attempt to install the newest version of Deskbar I get the following Critial Error message:

"A J. Rivera Media component failed to load the Product Info file.
 C:\......\Data\Default Resources\Options.mc.
Please reinstall the latest version of the JRiver Media Core program under the current account to correct this problem"

I reinstalled Media Center 10.0.150 and still got the same message.
I'm using Windows XP version 5.1
Any help overcoming this problem would be greatly apprciated. ?

Should be fixed now in 1.0.9.  Let us know.

Thanks Sherm.

Last night I installed version 1.0.9 and it seems to be working fine.

I right-clicked in the deskbar window and the menu that came up stuck for a long long time, even as I tried clicking in other places.

I can reconfirm tonight but I though that I would mention it in case anyone else has the same problem.

Also, when I uninstalled 1.0.6, it was listed at over 200 meg in size.  Is there a reason that it gets so big?  Or was this unique to my pc?

Wondering if the new document, website, and start menu searching is handy for anyone.  If you haven't tried it, give it a spin.

For me, it's a losing battle keep a tidy start menu.  Being able to type instead of hunt around is a nice change.

Thanks for any feedback.

Matt,
Your right.  I've to many Programs and Web Sites.  The list gets too long.
It would be great if there was a way I could delete some from the pop up list.
I tend to type in the things I want to find.

It loads a bit slower than v06 (which was the last one I used) when you click on it to get the menu shown.

I think it would be a nice if there would be a small icon next to the command. Like [word icon] somefile.doc or the funky MC logo next to MC commands.

I'm glad to have the calc back... pretty handy.

I dislike having internet favorites and My Document files in there.  I think it is getting away from the simplicity that I originally liked.

Can I remove them?  Are the types of things that show up in the list customizable, if so, where?

Thanks

Matt,
Would it be possible to make a list of all the stuff deskbar needs to load so that it can load the list faster? Also I would be nice if one could specify which areas (start menu, my docs, mc commands etc) one wants to have shown on the list.

Just to clarify, does this work with version 10?  Also, was the "playing now" issue fixed?

Thanks,

Larry

Agree with pank.  This is very good being able to search but it needs to be indexed so that the search is faster.  Also it would be useful to add other folders.  Due to the size of my music collection it is stored on a separate disc to my documents and so therefore it is not searchable by the desk bar.

The ultimate would be if it linked into the MC database for music so if I type in an album name it loads that album into MC or I could type things like random <Artist> and get a random mix of that artist.

Cheers for this Matt.  It is very good now and with a few tweaks could be absolutely amazing :)

So, what's the latest on the Deskbar? Is it still available?

I think I need an http download link, as the ftp link doesn't work for me.
