Sync To Handheld Doesn't Work
« on: November 12, 2004, 12:41:43 pm »

I have a shared folder on a laptop defined as a handheld device.

When I try to sync to it, I am shown the conversion status then when conversion is 100% I get an 'Out of memory' error. I get the error immediately if no conversion is needed.

I can read/write to the share from Windows with no problem and there is plenty of room on the laptop drive. However, MC reports the space available as either 679 Mb or 683 Mb. No matter, it would be enough for a single MP3.

An additional item is that when I add or delete a share my library loses all tag info for items in the library. I see an entry, but there is no info at all listed.
If I then do an import the files are all 'found' again.

Additional Info:
Every time I try a sync I lose the library. There is no info for any file in any view. This remains the same after closing and running again. I have to clear the library then import. Or restore a saved library.

Oh boy! More info.

I lost the library again after the 'import' to fix the missing info.
After that I tried a sync again.
This time I see the 'Handheld' action window, click the transfer button, and then I get a progress bar. The info in the pane is 'Converting: Bookworm' No progress is shown of course.

But I have NO file named even close to bookworm on either machine.

If I choose an MP3 I will see 'Converting:' and the song name though I have the option set not to convert same type.

I get the Out of memory Upload aborted error immediately.

Perhaps I am missing something here or this function is badly confused.

Any ideas?

GHammer,

I retested this and it appears to be working for me. Here is what I did...

1) Went to Tools->Options->Handheld->Configure remote and fixed drives....
2)  Added a Path and a Display Name. No playlist path.
3) Selected my named drive in the Action Window and selected 'Synchronize'
4) Synched one playlist with 3 files converting each from mp3 128 to mp3 32

All of this worked. I repeated without conversion with no problem.

Do you see anything different from what you tried?

Thanks Steve, but I lied!

Setting up the shared folder as a named drive same as you.
Then with any number and mix of MP3, APE, and/or APL files, right click.
Choose Send To->Devices & Drives
Choose the named drive you created.
Now you will get the error I described.

Because I do not wish to sync actually. I want to send a number of selections to the laptop in MP3 format. The laptop has only 20 Gb free, I can't sync the entire library to it.

Thanks again!

Spent many hours trying this and that. Same results always.
Including losing the tag info in the library.

I really do not see anything different between what we do except I use 'Send To' and you use the Action window.

But doing that results in the errors here.

At least I can backup and restore the library. Be a pain trying things if I had to rebuild it each time.

GHammer,

Just retested and cannot duplicate this immediately. Turn off the conversion and try sending 3 files. What happens? What is the physical path you have created and what have you named it? What version of MC 11 are you running?

Thanks,

Steve

Hi Steve,

Ok, I deleted the share on the laptop, rebooted, created a new share, rebooted.
I have went into MC and deleted the old share info then put this new share in:

\\Panda-pc\HanhanDocs\My Music
Named it 'HanhanEN'
Turned off the conversion.
I have 3 MP3 files in a playlist.
Click on Handheld Player in the action window.
Click on HanhanEN in that window.
Click the Synchronize button in the next window.
I see a list of playlists and choose the one I have with 3 MP3s.

I get the "Out of memory" error immediately.

I will close then restart MC now.

Ok, did that. None of my library has any tag info at all.
I'll post the system info after this. Let me know what you'd like to try next.

GHammer,

I think I see the problem. For now, fix it by naming the share something without Hanhan in it. This should be fixed soon.

Hi Steve,

No that didn't help.
I deleted the share on the laptop and recreated it named HDocs.
I did the same in MC naming it HDocs.

Same results.

Also, just curious. Why does this destroy the library info when it fails?
