LAME encoder settings
« on: November 13, 2004, 07:24:46 am »

Until version 11.0.124 my encoder settings for MP3 encoder were 192kps High Quality (CBR). Now there are more settings, but choosing 192kps CBR no longer has further options of Low / Medium / High Quality - did these not do anything or can they be accessed some other way??

Thanks, Ed.

It uses the "official" optimal settings for CBR encoding. The new encoder version needed changes in MC. You can use a custom setting if you like. The LAME documention: http://lame.sourceforge.net/doc/html/

Thanks for the links.

From reading it seems now it's necessary to put -h for High Quality in the command line now that there's no longer the option in MC?

So, to recreate my previous settings which were 192 kbps CBR High Quality,
I need to put --preset cbr 192 -h in the command line box. I think! ?

I think it is better to trust the LAME developers and just use --preset cbr "bitrate" (the current MC default for CBR). They claim that it produces the best CBR results. Perhaps the "-h" (= high quality) is already included in that preset or it has something better. I didn't find any specific information about that. All discussion is mainly concentrated to VBR quality issues. It is recommended to use VBR with default presets for the best results unless some old hardware player does not like VBR files.

Currently in MC11 the about 190-200 kbps VBR setting is "Quality > Target quality: High". It is the same as the previous almost legendary "--alt-preset standard" was.

Feel free to try the -h setting. It is even possible that is ignored if it is already included in the preset. Make some test encodings and compare.
