Is a 'Built-in' file integrity check a possibility?
« on: December 13, 2004, 09:03:04 am »

I would love to see MC include a media file integrity check (similar to MP3Test, EncSpot, OggTest, MPC Scan, etc) built right into MC, rather than having to use seperate utilities to check this. This would also allow the results to be written into a tag field for easily managing the results.

I always wanted this for a long time. But felt it might never get done provided there were 3rd party free tools that did the job already.

What im curious to know is if people have used other 3rd party tools and found a small % of files not passing the integrity check. I tried some of the checksum programs a while back and was dissapointed to see some files failing a successive check. And the check was performed immediately after the checksums were done.

It seems file integrity works on a relatively small number of files but i get errors when i try to do the whole library for instance. As far as i can tell my HD is in good working condition and memory is working fine as well.

This makes no sense to me at all...

the problem with most is they do not just check the mpeg or sound data and just check the whole file.

a minor change in the tag will make the check fail

the md5 master will create a md5 on just the mpeg data, i will only check mp3's however.

it would be nice if this option was built in for not only the

1. media data checksum
2. id tag checksum

so changes can be monitored

Exactly.. It needs to ignore tagging and just concentrate on the content.

But, the tags are part of my data. I don't want to lose any of it. If you are going to check, check the whole thing.

Unless you are talking only about something like EncSpot, in which case, nevermind! Then I'd understand just checking the content.

Personally, I live a charmed life I guess. About the only destruction I have suffered has been self-inflicted. I recently hit the delete key while the wrong directory was chosen. By time I got it to cancel, music to the Js was gone.

It made the USB2 external drive I back up to easily worth twice what I paid for it!

Maybe I should rephrase the question:

Is it possible that JRiver will build such a feature into MC11?

Mr. River?
