MC crashes and/or fails to load Rio S35S
« on: January 06, 2005, 09:09:31 am »

I have a Rio S35S (128MB) with an extra stick of 128 SD RAM.  Several issues:

(a) MC complains about handheld plugin version if I use the v9 plugin under v10.

So, I switch to the WMDM mode.  Under this mode, (b) MC10 displays/manages the two memory banks separately, which is a pain because it means one has to split up playlists into more-or-less equally sized lists before loading.

(c) MC can't complete transfer of more than four or five files before it starts giving Transfer Failed messages.

(d) The MC task just silently crashes and disappears.

So, basically there is no way to use MC with the S35S.  The Rio Music Manager works fine (except that it stinks by design).   IIRC,  the MC9 plugin worked fine.

Is the WMDM support improved in MC 11?

Is there a way to debug/trace/diagnose the problem under MC 10?

Does anybody have a success story to tell about a Rio S35?

v9 plugins will not work in 10.

Yes.

This is how WMDM support is implemented by Rio.

Can you try using 11?

Thanks very much for your response, Steve.

Will MC 11 support Rio playlists (so that the Rio itself will have each playlist that I load)?  If so, then I'll give it a shot.  If not, I may just stick with v10 and the Rio Music Manager.

And I guess hoping for an actual Rio S-series plugin for v11 is out of the question, right?

Sorry, last post for a while.... I'm also not privy to the info needed to write my own plugin, am I?  I haven't seen anything in the developer area for handheld plugins.

salsbst1,

MC 11 is designed to not require plugins for most devices. Support (including support for m3u playlists) is built in for devices that appear to your PC as a fixed or removable drive. For devices that do not, there is not any playlist support with the exception of devices for which there is a custom plugin. If we get a Rio S-series device and they provide a software developer's kit which supports playlists, we will write a plugin.

Can you access the Rio directly from Explorer?

I believe that RioRad Explorer is the only way to access the device as a drive from Explorer... not sure if that counts: http://www.redchairsoftware.com/riorad/ .

Thanks, Steve.

salsbst1,

Unfortunately that does not count because the device is not 'truly' presenting itself to the PC as a drive.   To support this, we need an updated SDK from Rio. Dos RioRad support playlists?

Based on what I've read, it doesn't appear to support playlists on the device, just the loading of the audio files listed in a playlist onto the device.

salsbst1,

So you have only seen playlists supported on the RioS35S using Rio's software and you cannot view the playlists on the Rio (as m3u or otherwise) using Window's Explorer?

If this is the case, not much we can do without an updated SDK from Rio.

Yes, I believe the only support for player playlists comes from the Rio Music Manager and it does not present itself as a drive.

Thanks for working through this with me, Steve.

I gave up and got my girlfriend a new Rio Forge (which does present as a disk drive).

Now I just have to figure out a way to use NTFS permissions or some other trick to let her modify playlists but not the media files and other library elements.

salsbst1,

MC 11 will allow you to interface with the forge and will create m3u (Forge compatible) playlists for you.

Thanks, Steve... I'm glad you say so, since that's why I bought it! :)

I'm not sure I'll be able to use MC for managing it, though, if I can't figure out how to protect the library from a novice user while still giving her the ability to manage her playlists.  I tried to deny her the Write privilege on the library directory with the exception of the file 'playlistx.jmd' but it seems that changes to the playlists are not saved unless she also has Write privileges on 'mediafiles.jmd'.

salsbst1,

In regards to synching from MC to Forge, the sync only goes from MC to the Forge, so you do not have to worry about the sync screwing up your MC library (if that is your concern).

Actually, I'm worried about general goofups in the library.  I'm going to test out the notion of nightly library backups and denying her write privileges on the media files themselves to see if that gives me the comfort level that I need.  I have just spent way too much time tagging this stuff to see a trackpad accident undo it all.

salsbst1,

You could also try posting your concern to the main board and I am sure others will give you many suggestions on other ways to possibly put your mind at rest.
