Downsample over library server
« on: January 06, 2005, 01:51:58 pm »

Hello,
I had a small suggestion some users may find useful.  That is the downsampling of music through the library server.
I listen to my music over the internet through an SSH tunnel.  I could be assurred a good stream at  128kbs but 300kbs may be too much for my connection.

Just a thought for 11.  I figure you already have this code for the Tivo server so it should not be too hard.

Thanks!!

Hmmmmm well I found it I think.
I changed the setting in options/Library to convert the music to WMA 48kbs.  I then restarted the server and restarted the stream it buffered then indicated that it was steaming between 180 and 300+ kbs...

Am I missing something or perhaps misreading the situation?

Thanks!

You have to set the option on the client, not the server. With Library Server, it's the client that chooses the file format and bit rate, not the server. (With TiVo Server and UPnP Server, it's the server).

Give it a try...

Welcome. I've got to put something in somewhere to clarify the confusion about the client setting the options...

I think that not all format and bitrate options are working correctly. MP3 seems to be always 320 kbps, WMA VBR comes out as 128 CBR, etc. Has anybody else noticed this?

I fixed a bug with this a while ago, but haven't looked at it lately. How are you determining that stuff is coming out at the wrong bit rate?

The trackname display panel on top of the MC window shows the bitrate.

For testing I just changed the MP3 bitrate to 32 kbps, but it still comes through at 320 kbps (The source is a 785 kbps APE file). Certainly it is not 32 kbps.

Actually this is a known bug that I forgot about - the encoding options changed recently, and I haven't fixed it yet. I'll get to this soon. You can try setting the MP3 encoder options on the server under tools->options->encoding.
