can't play itunes music on ipod via MC

I have a 2nd gen ipod nano and am using MC 12.0.207.  I imported some m4p files I bought from itunes.  When I try to play them on my nano, they don't play.  You can see the songs being flipped through on the interface, the names of the songs and length blips through. 

What's weird is that I *can* play these just fine using MC on my laptop.

Any clues?  I really don't wanna have to use itunes again.  I had to when I was still using MC 11 because it wasn't bookmarking on my audiobooks but when I upgraded to 12, that problem went away.
