OT: Any custom fees sending stuff from US to Canada?
« on: January 11, 2005, 07:57:06 am »

I have some stuff that should be sendt from the US to Canada, and I was wondering what the customs rules are there. How much can you send without paying customs, and so on? I'm sure somebody here has done something like that. Thanks in advance!

Hello Mastiff,

I live in Canada.

If you are sending a small package by mail and that the value shown on the customs declaration is small (under $75.00 or so I think), then they don't bother with the duty. But if the sticker indicate a higher value, they Canada Post will hold the package, send a notice to the recipient who will have to pay for the duty before being given the package.

Thanks! It will be a small package, and the value will be whatever it needs to be.  ;)

Oh, BTW. I seem to remember that it helps if you indicate on the customs declaration sticker that the content of the package is a gift.

If it's sent by Courier a brokerage agent will purchase it from the Gov and send a bill for the Customs amount plus a brokerage fee...
