Slow database on handheld

Why is MC slow when it builts and reads a database on a handheld? Both MC10 and 11 take almost 3 minutes to built (one-time operation) and 20-30 seconds to read the files every time when I plug in my portable drive.
I have the feeling that reading the database should be almost instantly on a Pentium 4 on 3 Ghz and only 1400 mp3-files on the portable.

It makes no difference in speed if I setup a folder as portable.

Do you have other drives that are turned off or disconnected?

Yes, I have. I have a USB harddisk, which I use as a backup device and two Jukeboxes (Archos JBM20 and iRiver H320, both are USB harddisks), but I use only one drive at a time.  All use full USB 2.0 speed.
Since MC sees only one device, how can this slow things down?

If they mount as the same drive letter, that might cause a delay.

If a drive is mapped to a drive letter (f:, for example), and it isn't there, the OS may need to time out before it can go on.

Jim, I don't understand what you mean.

If they all share the same drive-letter, would this not mean that the OS does not have to search for it?

On my system, Windows XP immediately recognizes a drive when I plug it in (except when it is the first time: then the hardware wizzard takes some time).  It then assigns a letter to it.

The delay is after I start MC and pick the handheld in the device-tree of MC. Then it begins to read its database. When the database is missing, MC sees the new drive without delay, but then prompts for building a new database.

The initial database creation takes a long time because the files have to be analyzed.  After the database creation things should be fast. Try getting the latest version of 11 and see if things improve, I have made optimizations to this recently. The read of the database should be fast.
