MC 11 problems with mapped drives
« on: February 22, 2005, 07:44:04 am »

Hi,

In my network I use 1 RAID-5 NAS to store my music and then have a local PC which accesses the collection via a mapped network drive (Z:)

Media Center seems to have a problem with mapped drives as any tag writing is exceptionally slow.  The inital import (about 7000 songs) took a couple of hours.  With my previous copy of Media Jukebox 8 it took about 9 minutes (I tested!)

Any of the plug-ins which also write to a files tags, via MC interface, are also hit by this problem.

If I put MC on the NAS itself (so it has direct access to the drives) the problem goes away.

Could somebody please look into this issue or advise a solution.

Many thanks,

Mark

I can confirm your slow tag writing behavior (v10) with all my music on a mapped drive, but since I run RAID5, I put it down to the slow write speed inherent in the RAID level.

Importing, however, goes quite speedily--as long as the files are valid. (If you have invalid APLs, importing slows down considerably).

Importing my entire library (over 23k files) takes significantly less than an hour.

Maybe there's another explanation for your difficulties...

Cant be RAID-5 because if I install MC on the NAS the delay goes away...

I have heard of this problem with MJ\MC I however do not know any info first hand.

maybe a search can find some info on this and maybe a way to fix it (if it can).
