Ripped CD information
« on: February 22, 2005, 04:21:12 pm »

Forgive me if this sounds like a crazy idea, but here goes.

My HTPC has two drives, one for apps and a 250Gb drive for all my ripped CDs (220 Gb worth of WMA Lossless files).  Unfortunately, I do not have a backup right now because my backup solution isn't big enough yet.  Until I do, I'm curious if the following is possible.

My current backup plan is to rip all the my CDs again, but one of the most time consuming parts for me was checking and updating all the CD information.  With a multiple CD drive system brought down to my family room, I can feed the computer with CDs pretty quickly while I hang around doing something else.  Unfortunately, it's the CD information that slows all that down.

Is there a way to generate the CD information in a fashion that the ripper understands so it won't go out to the internet and get it again?  Unfortunately, I did loose my system drive a while back, so I do not have all the information from when I ripped everything originally, but I'm thinking I can regenerate the information from my library.

I know it's not perfect, but having this information locally would greatly ease the process in the event that I loose my 250Gb drive.  If I have a backup of this information and the library, then I should be able to restore relatively easily.

In the meantime, I'm working on a long-term backup or RAID plan.

Sure You Can, manualy type it in

first you need to generate a CD ID for each CD, (i have the source code if you need it)

then you can put that in a file called cdplayer.ini

Like CD ID: [ad51ac]

The name of the CD: title=Heart

The Artist:  artist=Heart

The Year: year=1985

the Genre: genre=Rock & Roll

the number of tracks: numtracks=10

the name of the tracks

like :

[ad51ac]
title=Heart
artist=Heart
year=1985
genre=Rock & Roll
numtracks=10
0=If Looks Could Kill
1=What About Love
2=Never
3=These Dreams
4=The Wolf
5=All Eyes
6=Nobody Home
7=Nothin' At All
8=What He Don't Know
9=Shell Shock

this file is saved in the x:\Windows\ dir

and you will never need to go to the internate again

or you can put each CD in the drive allow media center to get the info on the internet

and each time you read a cd media center will save this info to the cdplayer.ini

now once that is done you can back this file up and you will always have this info

Does MC write to the cdplayer.ini file or does it store CD information in its database? (...or both?)

Either way, it would be a great to have a plug-in (hint, hint, King and MC staff) to allow for exporting this data for backup or even syncing with the files in MC (to correct for misspellings, for example, found later).

Both

If it can find it on YADB it will write to

C:\Windows\cdplayer.ini

The Database is not part of the cdplayer.ini, but CD\Tag info is always stored in the database.

Now A Spelling Plug-In Can Be Made

I Will Think About It, For My Next MC11 Project

But I Would Like To Update My Current mc < 11 Projects First

Well I wasn't exactly requesting a spelling plugin, though it might be a good idea ;D

Unfortunatelly YADB has a lot of errors and missing data. I was thinking of a plugin that could read the data stored for CDs and maybe offer a way to edit by typing (or sync to the Tags of the corresponding Album) and export the stored data, like to a CSV file [EDIT] or a cdplayer.ini file [EDIT]. Then it could be imported, as well, to update a new install of MC with all the CD data; making for quicker re-ripping (if ncessary) and for playing the actuall CD.

Wait a minute... forget the latter of those last two. Nobody actually plays CDs anymore ;D ;D ;D

Anyway, just a thought.

To be more specific, I'm looking for a way to get MC to create CDPLAYER.INI based on the information in the library.  I know I can go to the internet and get everything, but when I did it the first time, I ended up correcting or typing in more than half of the information.  Now that the original CD information is gone, I was hoping to be able to generate CDPLAYER.INI based on the library.  This way, if I were to loose my media drive, the ripping process is a lot simpler because I won't have to type in everything again.
