I have a need to do some quality vocal spoken word audio recording.

I'd really appreciate any advice on hardware (mic/sound card) and software.

I currently have a Creative Extigy and use Adobe Audition.

With the extigy (which I also have) and MC and a good mic, you should be able to do excellent voice recordings. See MC/Help/Configure/Recording.

Chances are I still cant asnwer the q tho While I've done a little pro audio design, it was at the low budget end, ie unbalanced electret mics + linearised FET buffer.

I need to produce audio CDs that just contain me speaking.

My main concern is the Mic.

I would prefer a really good quality headset mic.

Say, up to $500.

To get a balanced mic into your computer you will need a mic pre amp with unbalanced out or a little mixer http://www.behringer.com/UB1002FX/index.cfm?lang=ENG This company allso does Pro Mics at low prices check through their web site.

In the pro world Creative's sound are not regarded well at all.
I would be tempted to invest in a good sound card http://m-audio.com/products/en_us/DMP3-main.html With this card you wouldn't the mixer. I have the fire wire audiophile from this company.

BTW carbon mics were once used as pro kit. Dont even think about it!

My set up is a shure sm-58 mic with an m-audio duo preamp. I use cubase for recording but audition should be fine for just single track stuff.
