OT - Finally beaten by Copy Protection
« on: April 28, 2005, 01:19:16 pm »

I've managed to rip every copy protected CD I ever bought until today.  I just bought Lifehouse self titled album from play.com and it's an Enhanced CD.  I've tried the usual tricks like disabling autorun / holding shift but I can find no way of ripping it.  The rip window in MC doesn't recognise it and just tells you to insert the CD.  The strange thing is that I've made an exact copy using Nero and it plays fine in my CD player.  So I could create an illeagal copy (which is not what I want) but I can't put it on my iPOD!  Can anyone help?

Skeeterfood - is that based on specific knowledge or experience of Enhanced CD's?

They have a 21 day trial. It's worth a shot!

UPDATE:  A while ago I purchased Joe Bonmassa / A New Day Yesterday - Live and found I could not rip it.  I returned it to the store and they gave me a VERY HARD TIME about replacing it, but they did.  The replacement would not rip right either.  This time the store refused to refund my money.  I just gave them the cd and told them I will no longer do business with them again (after going there for 19 years).  In 19 years doing business there, I had never returned anything else.

I wrote the recording company.  A  few weeks later I got a phone call from them and was told that this title is not copy protected (they even tried one in their office) and that "Joe wouldn't do that...".

They sent me a free copy which rips perfectly.  So the two I tried locally were defective, not copy protected and one of the last independant cd stores in my town lost another customer, along with the 2 stores they had to close in the past few years.

I can't rip any enhanced CD in MC11. MC11 doesn't display any tracks for these CDs. Many of these CDs are older--before copy protection. I use another program to rip these CDs to .wav files, then let MC handle it from there. I wonder if  risingdamp's problem is with copy protection or whether there is come problem with MC11 and enhanced CDs in general with some system configurations.

That may well be it... I've got two drives in my main PC, and there are differences between those in terms of what they're actually able to rip!

I had the same problem.  Unfortunately, as of right now it looks like MC cant do it :(.  BUT, I found a program tha can do it, called Audiograbber.  For mp3 encoding you'll need to download the lame dll, but i just did a straight wav rip and re encoded using MC.  Audiograbber is here: http://www.audiograbber.com-us.net/

Good luck :)

I've found that even Windows Media Player will rip the enhanced CD's that MC 11 won't ?

I second the motion for AnyDVD. I used it for three weeks and found it invaluabe for ripping CDs and watching region locked DVDs. I decided to buy it. Its an awesome piece of software. Well worth the $19.

Some great advice here, thanks.  A friend of mine says he uses MC10 to rip enhanced CD's regularly without any problem so I'm guessing that the CD is defective or it's an MC11 issue.  I'll try some of those suggested programs.

Sorry about the enhanced CD hassle. This got broken in MC11. It will be fixed in the next build.
