Thanks to the tip of glynor, I now have the tags I need for a playlist that shows the 100 most recently recorded (as opposed to imported) files in my library:

~sort=[Date Created]-d [File Type]=[mp3] ~n=100

Basically the things that were creating problems for me were the fact that I couldn't import my old custom play lists (still don't know why, but don't care anymore), there's a new bar for editing smartlists (I was still trying to use the Search field like in MC9), and the help file omitted some modifiers I needed in order to create my list. (Created and Modified are not documented there... Created ended up working better.)

Still a Media Center fan after all!
