MC RegHack: "Secondary Buffer Minimum MS" Value
« on: May 15, 2005, 09:44:19 am »

FYI -

If you have a modern PC and don't like the 6 second pre-buffering of the next track in Playing Now the MC does, you can change a registry entry value that will lower the pre-buffering.  Here's how:

Stop MC playback.

In RegEdit, find "HKCU\Software\JRiver\Media Center 11\Player Core\Secondary Buffer Minimum MS" key.  Its default value is 6000 (or 1770 hex).  The value is in milli-seconds.  1000 is 1 second.  Edit the value and change it to whatever pre-buffering you'd like to try (like 1000 decimal for 1 second, for example).

Start MC playback and see if you like the new value.  If not, repeat the process and try again.

As usual, be careful if you've never used RegEdit or are not comfortable using RegEdit.

Of course, it would be nice if JRiver exposed this value in Playback Options someday.  It might be there already and hidden 'somewhere', but I don't see it.

Not sure of the value in changing this.  Seems arbitrary to most.  What would be the +/- of rasing or lowering the pre-buffer time?

Changing this may not do quite what you expect.

MC intelligently selects an amount of pre-buffering based on the speed of the source.  So a fast computer with a fast source will automatically use less pre-buffering.

The biggest change is visual.

The album cover art change more near when the track changes.

The Now Playing text change more near when the track change.

It bugs alot of folks that this info changes 6 seconds (by default) before the current song ends.

Thanks for the info Matt.

In terms of  a fast computer and source, what does MC specifically need to be faster.  Harddrive rpm/seek times, more/faster ram, more ghz on the CPU?

Which one matters the most?
