Why are downloads so slow here?
« on: May 26, 2005, 01:41:11 am »

I'm on a 2 MBit line, so I'm used to seeing around 200 k/sec when downloading. But downloading here I rarely see more than 30 in the daytime and 50 in the middle of the night, when the US is sleeping and most people in Europe aren't up yet. Anybody else seeing this? This is out of pure curiosity, I'm not really complaining.  8)

I'm on 1.5 here in Oz, and rarely get more than 20.5 kb/sec. Often it's as low as 8 or 9 Kb/sec.

I'm also on a high speed connection and the downloads from here are agonizingly slow for me as well.

Me too, though I get 60 to begin, dropping to around 40.  I usually get ~100

I just now got 100.9 overall downloading the current release.
But I use ReGet Deluxe and it downloads multiple parts so the overall rate is higher than if I used a single download stream.
The normal download without using ReGet is 26.4

I can get 750+ from most sites, so the 100 here is kind of slow.

I just downloaded 277 and got an average speed of 379.15 KB/s. I'm using FreshDownload from http://www.freshdevices.com that also splits the download.  I couldn't be more happier with that free tool.

You're right. That helped a lot. Thanks!

Yep, if I hadn't bought the other years back, that is what I'd use.

You lot need to get out more.  Is everything in life about speed?

In the UK we have a solution for slow downloads.  It's called 'go make a cup of tea'.

Well, I at least have an excuse.  I'm an American.   ;D

Didn't we invent "Bigger, Better, Faster, More" after all?

Thanks for the tip on FreshDownload dcwebman.  I'm gonna check that out.  I used to use GetRight, but then they came out with v.6 and I never felt it was good enough to pay for again (I think I paid for v3 or 4 and was getting free upgrades for a long while).
