Tagged CDs do not have trk # in file name
« on: May 27, 2005, 05:49:10 am »

I ripped a couple of CDs to ape and had to manually enter the titles, (not in yadb) and the file names were missing the track numbers. I know I can add track # with the fillename rule, but weren't the track numbers included by default  in previous versions?

Hmm... Do you mean that the filenames were missing the track numbers even you had specified the [track #] rule in MC options?

E.g. like here:

Did you get the track number tags?

I had assumed that track # was included in the filename as it was with MC 9.x by default. I had MC 10 installed for a few weeks but never ripped anything with it, (trk # is not in the default setting in v10 either),  so I didn't notice this until yesterday when I ripped my first CDs in V11. Once you add trk# to the filename rule everything is fine. The id tags were fine as they are there in the order that the CD is ripped, I guess.

I just think the trk# should be part of the default filename rule. All the other media apps (incl. MC 9.x) that I've used always include trk# in the filename out of the box.

But major drawback no2, is that track's in the output folder weren't in the right order, but random. If this is something that must be specified somewhere, the software is not good enough, such things comes naturally

This could be a problem for newbies as well, as they might not notice this at first, because the id tags do have the trk#.

I am sure the world will not come to an abrupt stop.

I personally do not include the track# in the file name since it is not useful data.

Nor does it make the media sound better

I have to agree on this one.  The default really should be:

Code: [Select]
Directory: [Artist]\[Album]

Filename: [Track #] - [Name]

As this is probably what most new users would expect.  King, you may not use the Track # in the filename, but you're probably not an "average" user by any stretch of the imagination.  I like it for those rare times when I explore my Music directory through Windows Explorer.  It keeps the Album's tracks in the right order.

I'm with King on this one and like the default as it is. If I have an MP3 file all by itself, I can tell immediately who the artist and song is. I can copy it somewhere and still know that. If you don't keep the artist name then you're always going to have to make sure you copy a folder name with it too in order to know the artist.

I don't have any problem with the artist name, I just think the filename should start with the Track #, then name, then title - by default. Actually, it doesn't matter which it starts with as long as all three things are in the filename.

Ditto

I have found shared files without tags, and the file name is incomplete.

Oh.

Artist/Album/Artist - Track - Title

Redundant, isn't it? But I like it anyway.

This seems pretty good for MC11.

Four user replies in the release thread, three of them confirming a fixed problem and one describing a likely network problem, and the forum regs are comfortably sitting here discussing the philosophy of track naming.  :)

Perhaps she is ready to go. I wonder if Jim smells a release again.

Because it does not matter what album it comes from, As long as you like it.

[Track #] - [Name] - [Artist]

Track # so albums are shown in order.
Name for obvious Reasons
No need for Album since it's in the directory name
Artist because it won't be in the directory name for Multi-artist albums.

Simple and logical.

But the beauty is you can change it any way you like. Perhaps the first rip you do should make it clear how it's going to come out and let you change it right there if desired.

Now that's a nice idea for making MC more user friendly.
