Just tried to play VOB files in MC 11 for the first time, and here are some problems I had:

- VOB files are not in the list of files for association with MC
- No matter which file I chose, MC only played one 7-minute trailer
- The filename (path) field has \\ at the end of it for all the VOB files (but not any of the other files in the VIDEO_TS folder)
- The filename (name) field for all the VOB files has ;1 tacked on to the end
- I tried to rename both the path and name fields, but they just revert back to their \\ and ;1 state
- The IFO files come up as filetype 'DVD', and the path is 'unnamed disc'

I don't know anything about these files, so some of those may not be real problems (are IFO files like APLs?), but in the end I couldn't watch the film with MC, and I want to be able to - can anyone help/explain?

The support for DVD playback generally is not really ready for prime time and it's worse for VOB files.

Me too.  I've only just started looking into ripping DVDs and playing using MC.  The concept is great and once i'm playing a VOB file (via File->Open Media File) the playback controls/AV quality are fantastic.  No probs with 5.1 sound at all.

What I can't do is:

- Tag properly
- Get Audio Decoder properties to "stick" (DVD Options->Properties)
    - need "enable S/PDIF" to stay on. reverts every time i stop playing
- an option to "start from the beginning" as posted elsewhere

Anyone else had success ripping DVDs and playing using MC?  Is enhancing this on the JRiver radar??

Like I can do with Nero showtime I would like to be able to just point to a directory and have it play without having to select a particular file.

As HDD sizes increase, more of us are going to start ripping DVD films - not just music.  I use Dr. Divx and the only let down is loss of chapters, although the support team swear its coming soon.

What I did notice is that the program has a basic but functional API...
How about MC ripping DVD's?

I agree we need to make the experience of playing VOB's from hard disk more user friendly (I do it myself so I'm motivated  ). Also need to import DVD/VOB content nicely. It's on my list but feel free to keep raising the issue to keep it off the back burner.

Wondering what the latest is on MC11 & IFO/VOB files. Tried searching, this seems to be the newest thread. Didn't notice anything in the feature lists either, which leads me to believe that MC11 cannot yet handle IFO/VOB files, even via TheaterTek or other external player.

I'm glad to hear some improvements to the MC 11 DVD experience are being considered. It would make a great DVD player if it were easier to import VOBs from the hard drive - or even better if it could read iso files. Take this one off the back burner and put it on the front!!!

This is how I do it and have never had any issues...

1. Rip the whole disk (DVD Decrypter!!). If you just want the main movie, re-author it to re-build related BUPs and IFOs (DVD Shrink or Nero).
2. Import the first vob in the main series of vobs (eg VTS_01_1.vob) - yes, importing is a bit hit-and-miss but if you *drag* this file into MC from the file system it always works.
3. Tag it, rename it and add cover art.
4. Play!

I've built a whole HD based dvd library with MC like this.

I had this problem too when I was using WinDVD audio codecs. I assume this is what's happening in your case too?? Try the PowerDVD audio codec or AC3Filter instead. You then won't have to keep re-checking the S/PDIF option. I personally like the PowerDVD codec the best as this also does DTS passthru.

Any way to kick off TheaterTek?

I have >100 DVDs ripped, and I'm not about to go through this much effort. I need a unified front-end for all my a/v; can't believe there's nothing yet than can handle TV, DVDs, mp3s, ... in a clean fashion.

I previously used RAYM's procedure for playing these files.  I hadn't messed with it much for several months.  With the latest MC11 (283, I think), I just get a black screen and no playback.  Occasionally, the program will crash or hang.
