Using Date Modified for Syncing iPod MC11.1.71
« on: December 03, 2005, 12:32:09 pm »

I have 1 album synchronized with my iPod without Album Art.
I will add album art in MC. This changes the Date Modified field as expected.
Trying to sync does not work. A message appaers that the iPod is fully sunchronized.
Conclusion: the sync program does not take Date Modifeid into account, although this was introduced in one of the builds of MC11.1

The (not so handy) workaround is to take the album out of the sync. Do the sync. Then incorporate the album in the sync again > files will be transferred.

I was wondering kind of the same thing about analyze audio: if analyze audio for files that are already synced with the iPod, will they be retransfered after the analysis?

The answer is NO.
Date Modified will be changed after analysis, but the file will not be (re)transferred.

Dutch Peter,

Though it does not actually fix the problem, an easier workaround is to just delete the files off of the ipod and then run the sync again.  This would save you from having to change what is actually synced.

It is kind of unfortunate that I have to remember not to import files into library before I analyze them. Otherwise they will be transfered to iPod at the next synch and in order to get them work with soundcheck I will have to manualy delete and re-transfer. On the optimistic side - looks like there may be a solution to this soon. There was a question raised about making some features (like Importing, Renaming and Analyzing files) automatic. Cross your fingers.

Please remember that we are in a Beta release.
As long as we provide the guys from JRiver feedback on functionality and bugs, they will be changing MC for the better.

Maybe someone from JRiver could confirm this is a bug?

I don't think this is a bug, properly speaking. I believe they (Steve?) just chose to base the list of files that needs to be uploaded on something else than the 'date modified' field. I assume there must be a good reason for this. I also assume that the unintended issue you point to in this thread (because it is an issue) can be fixed.

No?

Thanks for the comments all.

IOth has hit the nail on the head. Eventually we need to make the system take note of relevant file changes (e.g. analysis, new or changed artwork, etc) and then take appropriate action rather than keying off of the limited 'Date Modified' which is the legacy of some decisions that are no longer relevant. Improvements can be made in this area.

Thanks,
Steve

Ok, I understand.

I checked were I read that 'date modified' was making a difference.
It was NEW in build 11.1.60:
Quote
16. NEW: MC now checks for playlist as well as file changes when checking if a device is fully synchronized.

This is not valid anymore looking at the outcome of our thread?

Date modified is not always modified after analysis which contributes to different sync results.
