Linksys and Media Server
« on: October 09, 2002, 12:15:34 pm »

I'm  trying to setup my Media Server behind a Linksys 4-port router with built-in firewall so its accessible from the outside world.

Assuming I have a static IP (I don't but I'll work with that) does anyone have any experience with this?

Yep, works fine.  You just have to find a port that your ISP hasn't got blocked and make sure the linksys is set up to pass that port through.

Used mine too, worked great. Here, I'll throw my question in here too, since you have the full version, can you share video files with the media server?

Can someone give me a step- by-step?

I know its pitiful but I don't appear to be smart enough to work this out.

Exactly which linksys?
What's on the upstream side of the linksys?  Cable Modem, DSL Modem?
Does your media server already work inside your network?
What port is the media server listening on?

Thanks!

Its a BEFSR41 EtherFast Cable/DSL Router with 4-port Switch

Cable Modem
Yes the Media Server does work inside my network, I'm sharing through the router locally (but of course its a 192.168.x.x number)
Its listening on port 80 right now.

Page 57 of the user manual describes the process...

Log into the router and take the "Forwarding" page.  Specifically UPnP Forwarding.  Assuming you keep your server on port 80, on the line for HTTP, select TCP, leave internal port at 80, make sure the IP address is the internal address of the server, and check Enable.  That's it.

That was the easy part...  Are you sure your provider will allow incoming connections on port 80?   You may have to check with them and/or try different ports to get it to work.   If you wind up using a different port, come back to the same router page and use one of the "generic" lines to forward the port.

BTW, you can use a regular web browser to test the connection externally.  Point your browser to your public ip address and your chosen port and you should get a message that says something like "You are not using a standard Music01 protocol to access this server".  That's a good sign.  You got through.

Thanks for the help!

OK, I made the changes (the Linksys control panel forced me to external port 23 for tcp).

I have Media Server on my desktop.

I then ran MJ8 on my laptop and connected to my address with the port number and it worked!  does this mean I'm up and running?  The actual connection time felt longer.

Hmmm.  I'm not sure why the router would be forcing you to port 23 but if you're not going to use Telnet (which is assigned to port 23) you're OK.   If using your external IP address is working from inside your private network then you at least know the router is OK.  Still doesn't prove that your provider will allow incoming connections to port 23.  You're close though.
