How to import mpeg over 2GB in size ?
« on: July 06, 2005, 06:43:40 am »

I am trying to import mpeg2 video files into the MC library that are over 2GB in size and am not having any luck.  The mpg files under 2GB in size work fine.  Are there any hidden settings / options I don't know about.

I have been playing with MC11 (11.0.304) and the uPNP feature.  This works great with the Zensonic Z400 media player which is very similar to the Dlink DSM-320.  Trying to get it to play my recorded DVB-T mpg files and have run into the problem above.

Cheers,

Hmmmm... Just to make sure, the files do play in Windows Media Player, correct?  Also, are you on XP or 2000 or an older version of Windows?  I ask because FAT32 does have a 2GB ceiling on file size.  NTFS doesn't have this problem of course, but just in case...

Sometimes though, programs can be stupid about it and think they are still writing the files when they aren't (which leaves you with broken files that won't play anywhere).  Barring that, I don't know, though I'd be suprised if it was a MC limitation...

I've probably got a 2GB+ MPEG2 file around here somewhere... I'll give it a go and post back.

Fat32 should have a file size limit of 4gb me thinks? Unless Windows is doing something funny with it...
I don't think I've got a file thats over 1gig let alone 2  :)
I feel deprived  :'(

You're right, it's 1 byte less than 4GB on FAT32.  I was thinking of really old FAT16, which certainly isn't applicable.  I've hit the 4GB limit a bunch of times when using FAT32 formatted FireWire drives (I regularly transfer around 20-60GB DV-encoded video files at work), and it annoyed me.  I just mixed up the size...

Now all my external drives are formatted to HFS+ and I use MacDrive on my Windows machines.  It works very well!

I just finished testing it on my Windows machine at work, and wasn't able to get any MPEG-2 file to play in MC (over or under 2GB).  The separate AIFF audio tracks played just fine, but not the video.  The video files play fine in WiMP and WinDVD on this machine, and G-Spot reports that they render using: "(S) --> MPEG-2 Splitter --> InterVideo Video Decoder --> (R)" as the Rendering path.  The files also won't import into the MC database... I'm posting the logs:

5:05:05 PM: Playback: CPlayerZone::Stop: Applying database changes
5:05:05 PM: Playback: CPlayerZone::Stop: Finish (16 ms)

And I get a "Select File to Play" error.  Now, I do seem to recall getting MC to play MPEG2 files at home required me to install another MPEG-2 software decoder package.  It wasn't great quality though, and I don't have that software here at work.  If another decoder is needed, why?  And why can WiMP and WinDVD play it fine (and GSpot render it)?

Thanks for looking into this.

I am running Win XP SP2 with a NTFS filesystem.  The directory contains many large files, the biggest I have is over 18GB ( a High Def TV capture over 3 hours  :) this is a .ts file however)

All the mpeg files (biggest mpef is 3.8GB) play fine in zoomplayer , windvd but only the smaller (less than 2GB) import into the MC library.  These "smalll" mgs play fine in MC.

Cheers,

I can import and play a 4 GB MPEG-2 file.

Rendering in GSpot reports these codecs:

This doesn't seem to be a case of the files playing incorrectly or not but rather the importing into the MC library.  The mpeg files over 2GB do not import and get the message:

"ImportNewFiles:     Ignored (already in database, etc.)"

Although they are not in the database / Library.

To test I made a new directory with 4 files in it, the "play school " files are under 2GB and import fine, the other 2 are over 2GB and do not import.  I cleared the library, restarrted MC and mported just this directory:
