What to Buy?
« on: July 19, 2005, 09:07:34 am »

We got a Sound Blaster Wireless Music system at X-mas time. The thing stops and sputters on almost every MP3. Granted I use the LAME Extreme quality mode for all my MP3s but it should still work OK since the thing is rated to go up to 320Kbps MP3s.

I replaced the wireless network with a faster one and still its a dud. The wife has declared that I get something better. I upgraded the firmware and server app, no fix. I just re-ripped all my CDs (took weeks) and I really don't want to do it again at a lower quality just to get this thing working.

So what can I get that is:
Wireless
Doesn't require a TV,
Works good with all MP3s
Optionally uses the UPnP server in MC 11?

Here is a chance for you folks who have this stuff working to tell me what works and what doesn't.

I had an alternate motive for buying the SB Wireless. I had purchased it as a test to see if it was ready for prime time to use as the basis of a new arm of my business. It failed. I need something else. You see, I plan to sell hospitals on the idea of having a large shared jukebox for use in the operating rooms. Currently the docs leave their CDs in one room and have to keep the other docs from "borrowing" them. With a shared jukebox they can listen to their stuff in any OR they happen to be working in.

Have a look at this:

http://www.slimdevices.com/

The only thing it can't do is use MC's UPnP server.

Last Christmas, having tried one or two of these type of units, I found the above and have been so pleased with it I now have 3 in different rooms!  You will find the support and ongoing development up to the standard you get here.

I have used MJ/MC since v7 but no longer use it to play music only to manage the library/playlists, etc. as  'SlimServer' does not have any real music management features.

I used to have all my music in APE format for MC but as the 'SqueezeBox' has native FLAC decoding I used MC to convert all my files to FLAC.  It also has native MP3 decoding so you will have no problems.

The combination of MC to manage the music and 'SqueezeBox' to play it is terrific.  I just wish the SB could  access the MC library directly.

Hope this helps.

The device looks great. Too bad about having to manage on MC. Since it is open source perhaps some kind soul will make a bridge to the MC server.
