Crash/hang on playing short WAVs [solved]
« on: July 30, 2005, 04:46:03 am »

When  on MCV11 with installation defaults, I drag seeming any approx 2s log WAV to Playing Now and click Play, I get variously:

1 "Media Center has encountered a problem and needs to
close.  We are sorry for the inconvenience.", or

2 Hang, or

3 an approx 150ms segment looped, with an odd echo, often followed by hang.

With "Switch tracks: Gapless", this doesn't happen.

Is this a known bug? Is it due for fixing?

I can confirm this, more or less.  I created a 2-sec WAV, imported it, and then dragged it to playing now.  The first time I hit play it would not respond, the second time it would play twice.  It repeated this behavior almost without exeption.

My output is direct sound with a 5-sec buffer.  I tried taking the buffer down to .6-sec, and it played properly every time.  Took it back to 5-sec, and the problem reappeared.

I tried switching to wave out, and the problem was mostly still there, but with more exceptions.

chrisjj, it will help them if you list your output settings.  I think the issue is in the buffer at start of play.  If you are using the latest version, you should post this issue to the .310 thread.

Thanks. Disappointing to discover such a basic bug in a V11 :(

Before I continue with investment in evaluation, is there a bug list visible somewhere?

> chrisjj, it will help them if you list your output settings.

I thought "installation defaults" defined them, but OK:

Output mode: Wave Out
Output mode settings...
 Wave mapper (recommended)
 0.5 seconds
[ ] Aggressive reset (enable if you hear bursts of sound when starting
new tracks)

> If you are using the latest version,

I'm using the one currently offered for download, but that's not .310, but Version: 11.0.309.

309 is the correct latest "release" version.

What are these wav files that are so short? You might be trying to do something that MC was never designed to, or of coarse this may be an area no one has tried before, (very short files), and therefore may need some tweaking.

I don't think I've ever played a file shorter than 7 or 8 seconds in the 3 years I've been using MC and so have never come across this issue.

Unfortunately this is the weekend, so the JRiver team may not see this until monday, but maybe one of the  "Beta" testers will help out.

As very few users run MC with default settings, I doubt that even the JRiver has those defailt settings memorized, so it always helps and saves time to list all relevant data that describes how a person uses MC. The more information one supplies, the more helpful the "brain trust" here can be. :)

There were some major changes between v10 and v11, so there are still a few small bugs to be worked out. It may be a big bug to you, but compared to the total development picture... , but I assure you that every issue is looked at.

> What are these wav files that are so short?

Spacers.

> You might be trying to do something that MC was never designed to

Hey, MC accepted the job.

> or of coarse this may be an area no one has tried before

Now you're depressing me. QA, anyone?

> I don't think I've ever played a file shorter than 7 or 8 seconds

7 seconds is plenty short enough to cause failure mode 3 here.

> the JRiver team may not see this until monday

Thanks. No hurry.

> As very few users run MC with default settings, I doubt that even the
> JRiver has those defailt settings memorized,

No memorisation required - an install will tell them.

>  so it always helps and saves time to list all relevant data that

Eh, no!! It takes A LOT of time to manually copy out all the settings from the UI. Or is there a settings .ini or the like I can quote?

> It may be a big bug to you, but compared to the total development picture... ,

Meaning I've yet to find the really big bugs?

Chief, you sound confused.

On the off chance that you're actually seeking a solution, did you try  changing from "Switch tracks: Gapless" to one of the "Standard (Gapped)" settings available?  I have no doubt that you have some reason ready for why that wouldn't work for you, but those are spacers and that's what you say you want 2-second WAVs for.

As for the bug you found, I think it's an important one, in that it might impinge on more "mainstream" use of the program; for example, listening to music.

"Before I continue with investment in evaluation"--I'm sorry, what are you talking about?  Is everyone but me getting paid for this?

That is indeed the use I am making of the program.

Thanks.. searching now.

Hmm... Search For: .309 says "No results found". Yet a manual search finds many inc. "Media Center 11.0.309 Release 14-07-2005, 15:46:08". A bug in the forum software?

And how does one submit a bug report for the current general release? Topic "Media Center 11.0.309 Release 14-07-2005, 15:46:08" is locked.

If you'd like to report bugs, please use the latest build.  It's always available in a thread near the top of this board.

Also, check that your wav file isn't something special.  You could do this by encoding to wav a very short audio file or by ripping a CD and using MC's Media Editor to shorten to the length you want.

Umm... are you not interested in bug reports on the official release i.e. the build you're currently offering for evaluation on http://www.jrmediacenter.com/ ?

Chris,
I'm afraid we can't meet your standards.

Perhaps you'll need to decide whether to adapt or move on.

Oh, my expectations are pretty low - really.

OK, I've tried the latest build and the fault remains. I'll report the report in the buld release thread.

> Also, check that your wav file isn't something special.

Do note that this bug is not confined to this user or this WAV file.

> You could do this by encoding to wav a very short audio file

Done that - same fault.

The file plays as expected.

Try updating your sound card driver.

Try switching playback between direct sound to wav out.

Other playback options may help.

It also opens fine in Media Editor.

You might also try updating Windows.

If you have another PC, try it there.

You've got something "special" going on with that file.  I'm trying to help.  I can play the file.  You can't.  What's different.

If you do Windows, check for updates, there are a lot of other possible changes that _might_ affect your problem.

And PLEASE try it on another PC just to satisfy yourself that it will play.

Your options? As I keep saying, this is a report of failure with installation defaults.

Well that's handy to know thanks, since MC is the only player out of MC, WMP, WinAmp, GoldWave and others on this machine that crashes on this or any short WAV.

I am satisfied it will play thanks. And Jim, did you miss the confirmation in this thread from jgreen, on another PC?

Yes - so far, same problem with WMA lossless, FLAC etc. I think this bug has nothing to do with the format. Just the length of clip.

I had a problem with MC10 and short audio files, that I keep in a library called "Computer Events" (error sounds, email notifications, ...). The visual display of playback was always ahead of what I was hearing, and pauses between tracks weren't working properly after the first few tracks. No crashes in MC10, however.

I have just upgraded to MC11 but I didn't succeed in importing all my old MC10 libraries into MC11, so I cannot test its behaviour with short audio files.

I can't reproduce this.

What are the playback settings in Tools > Options > Playback > Audio ?
(- all of them. I don't know what the defaults are and I am not going to wipe my current configuration for finding out.)

What is the soundcard and its driver version?
