Can someone send me the link to move files between disks
« on: August 07, 2005, 06:48:24 pm »

Hi,

Can someone send me the link to a thread which describes how to move songs from disk V: to M:. I can't find the thread myself. Must be using the wrong words to find it.

It must be described somewhere.

Marsies--

a.  How come you haven't kept us updated on you in-dash ipod electronics?  Last I heard, you were trying out expesive gadgets.  How about some details?

b.  I'm one of the people who asked about moving files.  Here's what Alex B and others suggested:

--Select the files you want to move from within MC.  You can find them by track or by location.  Try this out with just a few files first.

--Right click > library tools > rename files from properties, and go to the dialogue box.

--Under "Directories / base path", navigate to your "M" drive and go the the directory you want your files in.

--under "rule", put in the directory structure for your destination a/bum/aritist directories.  Until you do this, you're only moving the tracks, not the directory, so set thigs up here.

--Under 'filename / rule", if you want to change the track filenames on the drive, you can do that here.

This is the most straightforward way to do this, IMHO.  The only complaint is that it can take a while, and if you're doing 10,000 tracks it will take HOURS.

If you just want to move from disk to disk, you can use search/replace. Search for V:\ and replace with M:\, and choose only to search filename (path). That's the easiest way.

Thanks, I'll try this today. Need to move about 300GB on ape files from V: to M:.  ::)

About my iPod electronics. It works but I'm not satisfied. I hope that mister Kenwood will contact me this week. The system works but not according to my expectations. I'll post details in the handheld section. Not sure if MC or mister Apple has a part in this.

You can also move the files outside MC using Windows Explorer. After that Find and Replace V:\ with M:\ (in filename paths) will make the changes in a few seconds.

Because MC cannot find the files it just updates the paths in the database. MC will show an error message about the missing files, but after the replace MC will find the files in the new location.

Running library updates for hours is potentially more dangerous. I have found that the library gets corrupted easily if something makes MC crash in the middle of the process.

Alex B,

I'm convinced. Your solution sound more solid to me. Gonna copy the whole V:\MC tree to M:\ and will then try your solution.

I will report when it's done.

Remember to make a library backup before starting (or backups if you have more than one library).

Try it on some test files first.

Sounds like this explorer + replace path afterwards will work.

I still prefer to do this all within MC via the older drag n drop. Maybe we make enough noise they will bring it back.

Moved everything from V:\ to M:\. Tried it first to move files outside of MC. That gave some directory delete problems in MC. Had to confirm deletion for every directory.

Then I did the move within MC which worked okay except for removing all the empty directory's. MC asks to remove them but only does it occasionally. Removed them myself afterwards. It took some time and i also renamed all files from properties which works but not 100%. Can't explain why not.

Anyway, my files are now on the right drive.  :D
